My "new" 1999 - okay, let's go a different direction

Okay, I just posted about my "new" 99 SR5 3.4L 4WD manual tranny. I mentioned it had high mileage, but I didn't specify how high. Well, it has 169K miles.

Now, I'm not one of those who worries too much about mileage since I maintain my vehicles very well. Moreover, I am well aware of Toyota's reputation of having darn near bulletproof drivetrains. (And I've driven Honda cars for years, which I look at as being similar in reliability and durability.) But since I bought this one used, I don't necessarily have that benefit, and I didn't know the previous owner.

Here is what I do know about it though.

• One owner
• Clean title
• Seems to have been well-maintained from what I can tell from my own knowledge and experience
• Timing belt & water pump replaced at about 150-155k
• A/C & Airbag Systems checked at about 150K
• Fuel filter & plug wires replaced at about 155K
• Engine/powertrain computer module checked at 155K

So based on what I know and how it runs (very, very well), do you see any major red flags here? I know this is not an exact science...just looking for feedback. I'd like to drive it to work regularly (55 easy highway miles each way) but I want to feel reasonably confident that it'll do it.

Heck, I'd like to go for 500K!

 

Hmm.. sounds alright so far. How's it ride? Any signs of the dreaded "saggy rear" from old leaf springs? Rust on frame? Brakes ok, paint still intact... Even if you start out perfect, you'll need to address a lot of things again by 500k. But that's ok

 

It actually rides really nice for a truck. I was kind of surprised. I don't see any signs of the saggy rear. I think I'll take some pics today of some details and let you guys check it out and tell me if anything looks bad...at least from what you can tell in pictures.

I didn't see any noteworthy rust on the frame, but I'll look closer today. Brakes seem to be fine. For the most part, the paint is in excellent condition. But there are a couple of very, very small rusted/bubbled up parts on the bed and just above the windshield. I'm sure those will need to be addressed at some point. But I haven't seen any on the bed or cab so far.

According to carfax, it's never been in any kind of accident, flood, or salvage situation. I know that isn't 100% guaranteed, but with all the other evidence, I believe that to be the case.

 

man that truck will go forever since it has been maintained so well. I had a 97 just like yours and i ended up getting 205,000 out of it before my wife totaled it. It was still running strong and i still drove it on 8 hour trips hauling 800# of camping gear once a month. the only issue i ever had was some coil packs going out and a TPS sensor going bad. Both of these two things will cause hte truck to miss and cut out while accelerating. I believe you will be fine in that truck.

 

I had a 99 ext cab with 120K on it when I traded it in on a new one. Those trucks are awesome and will go many more than 200K.
