So I did the oil change on my truck earlier today. Put mobil 1 full synthetic 5w 20 in it with a Fram ultra oil filter. The manual says 6.1 quarts, but I only bought 6 so I added all 6 and drove it. It runs good, but do I still need that .1 or are the leftovers in the engine sufficient?

5.5 quarts is how much you should put in. If you put in 6 quarts, you will most likely be a 1/2 quart over. With the truck off and after letting it sit about 30 secs, pull the dipstick out and it will most likely be a 1/2in. over the dot(full mark).

Workman seriously doubts that a 1/2 quart over will hurt anything though.

On a level surface, Workman will pull the drain plug and let the oil drip out for about 30 minutes(Workman is NEVER in a hurry).

After putting the drain plug back on, he then fills up with a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 he buys at Wal Mart....this is the only thing Workman will buy at Wally World and only cause its the cheapest oil:(

Workman then replaces the filter, and starts the truck up briefly and checks underneath for leaks.

Then, Workman will wait about a minute, and check the dipstick. It will always be a 1/2 quart low, so Workman will dump in a half quart of Mobil 1, and save the other half for next time around. 5.5 quarts will bring the oil level right to the dot.

In most vehicles, the distance from the fill line to the bottom of the dipstick usually equals 1 quart.

I am guessing he has a 4 cyl and would take 6.1 quarts, since his description has 08 reg cab base.

Workman has looked at the OP's info and sees a regular cab base....so I4. Disregard the 5.5 quarts, that is for the V6.

Na, I find similar 5.5 with my 2.7L.

IIRC I've been adding 5 and still register around 1/4 above the low level at oil change.

You are right. The oil level is over the fill mark. Why the hell does the manual say 6.1 quarts? Now I'm PISTED OFF!!!
