rattling noise while acclerating

hey guys, first post here.

i got a new 2008 tacoma about 2 weeks ago. a few days after i bought it i have noticed a rattling noise while accelerating. it really seems to start rattling around 2000-3000 rpms. it doesn't make the noise when i'm coasting, braking, or when revving the engine in park. it isn't terribly loud but it is annoying and can be heard over the radio. could it be the fuel? i've been putting regular 87 octane in it since i've gotten it, not premium, which now that i think about it is what toyota recommends.

i hope that's what it is...i'd hate to already have something wrong with it and since i've had great past experiences with toyota. thanks

 

i had a rattle and all it was was a heat shield that had bent up and was touching the driveshaft

 

You could give us a little more info....

Such as which transmission, engine, 4x4 or 4x2....

 

4x2, v6, auto

i suspected the fuel because when i drove it around before my first fill up i never noticed the noise. i've only noticed it after i've filled up the tank a couple of times.

 

Is it knocking or rattling?

If its knocking, try running higher grade gas.

 

what's the difference? the best way that i can describe it is like a rattling noise that only comes on while accelerating. i'll definitely running higher grade gas next time.

I have another thread on ticking, which is apparently common, but benign.

 

i would say it's much more similar to a rattling noise.

i can't figure out why the noise is virtually nonexistent or very slight when revving the engine in park but when you're accelerating, particularly around 40-50 mph, it becomes more obvious. it seems to go away again when you get at 60+ and at interstate speeds it isn't even there.

da hui i don't think it's knocking.

 

This is my guess as well. The heat sheild may be vibrating against something.

 

upon further examination, it probably does sound more like a "ticking" noise rather than a "rattling" or "knocking" noise. also, the sound does come up when revving the engine in park.

does anyone have any further information on the ticking noise that is apparently common? any idea on what's causing it and what gets rid of it?

 

are you sure that the ticking noise isn't just your fuel injectors firing? i noticed mine were a little more audible after install my volant ram air and CAI setup

 

i wouldn't know even if that is the case. i've never heard the fuel injectors firing on any other car i've been in or driven and i haven't put any mods on this truck. i've only had it about 2 weeks.

maybe its not knocking but pinging

also do a youtube search for "engine knock and pinging" to if it sounds similar to what you are hearing

 

thanks for finding this zebra. what this article talks about sounds like what i've got...the pinging/ticking/whatever you want to call it noise occurs really only at higher rpms and while accelerating. the noise is virtually nonexistent at cruising speeds. hopefully it's just the lower grade fuel i've been using. i'll obviously finish out this tank first then fill up with the 93 octane next time.

 

yeah i already did that. that's part of what led me to believe it's not an actual knocking. that knocking noise in those videos is much, much more pronounced and obvious and occurs when the engine is idling. my engine sounds perfectly normal while idling and the noise i've got is more subtle.

BTW do you use premium in your tacoma?

 

i run shell 87 octane in my tacoma. no problems. i learned about some of those "value" gas at some stations in my last car

i have the bottom of barrel tacoma. the only factory option i have on my 08 4x2 regular cab base model is air conditioning. i'm adding what i want to the truck little by little. that way i can get what i want without having to pay for shit i don't need and plus its more fun to mod!!!!

 

I would try another gas station or a higher grade of fuel, it sounds like you have a spark knock. If the fuel you are buying is not up to par the engine will make a pecking noise because it is not getting the right amount of fuel or octane. This is really common on supercharged vehicles and even on vehicles with a "performance chip". I had a dodge with a performance chip installed and when I used low octane fuel it would spark knock just like you are describing. If changing fuel brands or octane levels does not work take that sucker to the dealer. Also have you made sure the oil level in the engine is correct, might want to check that as well. Good luck!
