OK, brace yourselves-- here is a pic of my current foster dog. I named him Floyd because he's so pink.

He's severely neglected, had untreated demodex mange plus skin and eye infections and overgrown toenails and was really skinny.

He's been with me about a week and a half? On a ton of meds & supplements. He smells a tiny bit better now, his eyes are clear, the infection is looking a little better, his nails are trimmed. I'm not sure when/if all of his hair will grow back but once he's healing I'll find him a forever home.

He was left one night in a taped-up cardboard box outside of the animal shelter but is a pretty happy little guy.

Yes, he looks like an opossum or a naked mole rat. I have a big dopey red pit bull and my boyfriend calls this pair Ren & Stimpy, it's pretty spot-on.

I'm afraid I'd be a miserable failure as a pet foster. If I take them home they aren't going back, they're mine forever. Thanks for doing what you do, so many dogs have awesome families because of you.

For me the trick is to pick short term medical "projects," like neonatal kittens or a series of broken/neglected small-breed dogs. I've also done a few "fospice" dogs, who are terminally ill or have severe behavior issues, and given them time to end their lives with love and in a home. My own dog is a foster failure, but I think I knew I wanted to keep him the moment I met him.

The poopster is down with a hematoma in his ear. Can't figure out what happened but it did. Vet drained it today and he's in the cone-of-shame. Vet got 14ml of fluid. Hopefully, this will heal quickly. He's pretty uncomfy :(

Ugh, hematomas. Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason, no allergies or ear infection, they just appear. Hope he feels better ASAP.

Hope your boy is on the mend soon, velvety ears and all. He says bacon is medicinal, btw.

My pup had a hematoma a couple months ago. Try to watch him carefully, if you just got it drained without stitches it is easy for it to fill up again.

    Hope he gets better soon.

Thanks all. The way I'm hoping he won't need to get stitched up. Odds are against it tho :(

My friend did the surgery with the mesh graft for her dog, in hopes his ear wouldn't be scarred/crumpled and his ear is not as it was before but is flatter/smoother than it could be. I've also seen hematomas heal up after one or two flare-ups/draining which is what I'm hoping for you guys!!

I gather the reason draining doesn't work so well is because it's difficult to get the two parts of the ear to heal together. Kinda like when a piece of Pita bread puffs up-won't ever lie flat. I'll know more when he goes for his follow up on Tuesday.
