Need to melt my copper.

So I've been looking around in my house and I found a little bit of copper wire that I want to melt into one piece. I have a torch capable of melting it, but I don't have a crucible. What other methods could I do to melt this in/on? I've seen people melt metal on flat rocks and even on steel. Help? I know steel probably wouldn't work, but will rock that's capable of the heat? I want to know if the copper will get rock fragments in it or not.

 

what are you going to do with a giant peice of copper?

 

Scrap it?

 

A granite rock would be best. Or even just a piece of granite if you could get a small scrap from your local granite fab company.

 

Keep it. I'm investing into precious metals. Silver so far. And I'm just looking for broken wires or extra wire laying around here to keep. I know copper isn't worth a lot, but you never know about metals down the road.

 

I'm getting a whole bunch together and sitting on it to see if the price of copper will go up

You are likely going to introduce impurities into the copper, there is also the issue of toxic fumes from the copper as well. Just throw all your scrap into one bin, it will weigh the same whether you melt it or not.

 

I know. Easier to carry around this way though. And takes up less space.

x2. If you're just collecting wire, strip the wire and spool it up.

 

i see the advantages of wanting to melt it, its not worth too much, i wouldnt want to have barrels sitting around, but i wouldnt mind having a couple bars...

 

Save all of the Jefferson nickels and pre-'82 Lincoln cents you get too. It's illegal to melt them currently, but who's to say what happens down the road. With Copper prices high (historically speaking anyway) it's like getting free money because you only paid face value to get their metal content.

If space were a real concern, I'd get a press to crush everything down before I attemped melting.

 

And, deduct your time and whatever gas or electricity or other costs are involved, then see if it's really worth it. I'm guessing you are better off just turning it in now, as is.
If you're interested in silver, I have a bunch of Morgan silver dollars and some other silver and gold I am going to get rid of soon.

 

As others have said, melting it down is gonna cut way into the value, and not really reduce the storage space much. Takes a lot of energy to melt copper.

 

Exactly. Bars take up less space.

 

Pounding gets about the same results.

I think anyone could do quite a bit of compressing with a vice and a small hand sledge.

Not as cool as molten cooper.
