Need to melt my copper.

Everyone is trying to help you not spend a lot of money on melting supplies that won't work and potentially ruin your copper... You're being stubborn and not listening to the advice you don't want to hear.

 

What forms of copper do you have right now... pipe/tubing cut-offs, scrap electrical wire..etc?

How many pounds do you think you have?

 

Also... copper is not and never will be a precious metal.

Gold, silver, platinum? They take many, many pounds/tons of ore to get less than an ounce of metal.

Copper? Meh... It's plentiful, and the yield from ore is high.


You're comparing something that's a couple of bucks a pound to metals that are hundreds of dollars an ounce.

Copper is "worth" no more effort than stuffing it down into a 5 gallon bucket with your foot.... and it will never be worth more than that.

Electrical wire. Not a lot. Just collecting what's around the house. Haven't really started looking yet

 

Does your dad know you are taking his copper?

Go to ebay and buy copper bars if that is what you really want.

I invested in silver once, I lost money too.
ive got like 5 ounces worth half of what it was. But anyway, they're right about copper not being worth a whole lot. Silver is considered a precious metal, but I heard that they don't really mine for silver, instead its a byproduct of mining for other minerals.

 

How did you lose money? I thought silver has been going up

 

I don't know enough, and it just doesn't sound like enough return.

You may want to rethink melting it the scrap yard may not take it because you could have put anything in side a just covered it with 1/4" of copper.

They would want to pull random samples and cut them open... and at $3/pound, it's not worth their time.

 

There are Silver mines but a lot of production is as you said a byproduct of mining for other minerals. Such as Gold.

Get a hydraulic press (ton of uses for them, you'll be glad you have one sooner or later).
Make one of these. Slice the outer tube in half and rig a hinge on one side and solid latch on the other.
Mount the bottom plug to a plate.
Slip the sleeve over the plug, load the sleeve with copper, drop the piston into the top, and press it down on the press.

When done, if the copper has squeezed between the piston and sleeve and you can't withdraw it, just open the outer sleeve.

 

Make one? I don't have that much time on my hands. Lol
