You know, you do your research, you pick out a drill, you check the website to see if they have it at the local store and you show up at the store to find out it is out of stock. Going to check the Lowe's over on I-25 in the morning.

    Dewalt 20V cordless.

Might settle for one of the 18V models. They are a bunch cheaper and it is only a 2V difference.

Edit: which reminds me, need to pick up some sheet metal to do test drilling on.

I just bought the 20v cordless. I love it. I got the combo with the 1/4 inch impact driver! They are fricken awesome!! I highly recommend them. And most items at lowes from dewalt went down in price I am pretty sure.

I got a funny feeling new models are coming out. I'm really hoping the one at I-25 has some in stock. I want to get this done today.

Hey Silas, what's that place that sells metal? Lowe's has some 12"x12"x.25". Perfect footprint for a backing plate but seems overkill in thickness. Thinking some 1/8 or 3/16 would suffice and be a bit easier to work with.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if I can find the right size nut and have a bigger base plate fabricated.

Thanks, on my list as a backup. Thinking that finding the right nut and welding it to that 1/4" plate that I found at Lowe's will be the perfect solution.

I stopped at the Lowe's over by I-25. Drill was in stock:

Couldn't find a punch though. Going to practice on the sheet metal I picked up and see if I can go without.

17.42 mpg on the latest tank. That's with roughly a quarter tank spent out off-roading and the rest of the tank on slightly low pressure. Checked the front while filling up and down around 23 psi.

Anyone have experience with hole saws on steel. Tried a practice go on the test piece and the saw is wandering a good bit.

My other option is to not worry about the hole being ugly and find some rubber or plastic trim to line the hole.

They have always wandered for me. Even when using a drill press. Key is slow speed with even pressure. Also sometimes it works better without oil, as the oil/metal chips can turn into a paste and clog the teeth. I use compressed air to blow out the chips and cool the blade.

An alternative would be to use a circle cutter or hole cutter. Instead of being a saw, it uses a cutting bit on a 90 degree arm off the central shaft.

You've probably already done this and are way ahead of me here but I'll make the suggestion anyway - drill a pilot hole first, maybe 1/8" dia. (not much bigger or the saw drill will grab), then try the saw.

Use an awl to punch a dimple in it so that it won't wander. And always use the center drill bit unless you have the material on a drill press or something of the sort.
