I just bought a 2013 Tacoma, and the keys have chips in them.I would like to have a key that would just unlock the door in case I ever accidentally lock my key in the truck.I know the computer chip key is expensive and the dealer has to make you one. What I am asking is, can I just take my key anywhere and have a duplicate made? I know it won't start the truck, I just want it to open the door. Thanx!

When I was trying to get one made no one besides Toyota wanted to touch my key. Toyota charged me less than $15

Was it just a regular key? Or did it have the chip? Mine has the theft deterrent imobilizer, from what I read they cost more.I'll check with Toyota on monday, if I can get akey for 15 bucks I'll do it! Thanx!

They cut just a regular all metal key. My original is the same as yours with the engine immobilizer.

That's fine. I just would like to keep an extra key with me, in case I accidentally lock my keys in the truck.I have a Lowe's and a home depot close by.Do you recommend one over the other? I'll check both tomorrow.

Which ever one you prefer. Just check the key to make sure it works before you leave.

I got a non-chip key made at Lowe's for my 2013. I unlocks the door fine, but won't start the truck. Keep it under the truck in a magnetic key holder... anyone finds it, they still can't start the truck.

Got my key made at Lowe's today, 2 bucks! They told me never to use it in my ignition, since it has a chip in it, and the copy don't. He said some cars lock the key in the ignition if you try to use it, and you need to call a locksmith to get it out! I only wanted it in case I accidentally lock my keys in my truck.I'm definitely going to make sure I never use it in my ignition!!!!!

I too have a plain key for that reason, and same result in my '06. Cranks over fine, just no fire. It didn't lock out, and started fine with the chip key after. Take advice from lowes, home depot, etc with a grain of salt.

First thing I did was try my new key in the ignition. Cranked it over fine... but no start. No locking the key in the ignition.

After purchasing my truck the dealership sent a blank plastic credit card key in the mail... had to take it to them to have it cut. It was free and only opens the doors.

Ive never heard of this "feature".

Not saying it isn't true, but I'll have to throw the bullshit flag on this until proven otherwise.

I never heard of it either, sounds like a croc, but, why take a chance? Does anyone know what a programed chip key cost at the stealership?

About $150 -175 here for the key and programming here in Canada, you guys in the US will probably be slightly less.

Seric's thread shows a way that costs about $40, including the tool.
