Hey guys, I am to the gun world somewhat and I inherited a .22 from my brother after he passed away. (hit by a motorcyclist while walking his dog) I it is bare bones stock and I would like to start modding it. Any suggestions/ directions I should go. What aftermarket brands to stay away from? Thanks for the help

I dont give many secrets away, but I built my oven. I went to an HVAC duct builder and had them build me a 24x24x36 nox with 1" insulation and a metal lining on the inside. I then installed the element and controls from a $50.00 used oven I bought. the top comes of to load my parts in it, they just hang from the top. It works absolutely fantastic. maintains steady temp, easy to load, and I have under $200 in the whole thing.

Sorry, ignore that last post. But I did just order a GM 20 " fluted stainless bill barrel and a Yukon extreme stock.

Just picked my 10/22 up last week. Looking to get to the range with it. I still need a scope and a few other little things.

Anyone have an opinion on aftermarket trigger groups or doing a trigger job on the stock trigger?

Cool deal. Wondering what people on this forum had used or done. Just helps cut down on info overload and gives a starting point for research.

Been looking at the Kidd trigger kits. Have to wait a little to spend that much, but damn does that look quality and so far the reviews I've read have been good.

Kidds are regarded as some if the best out there, Valquartzen (sp) as well. For most folks a drop in hammer from Clark, Power Custom, Volquartzen etc: will all they desire. I've done countless "trigger jobs" on these rifles just by reworking the factory parts with great results. There are plenty of walk thoughts on RFC. I own five 10/22 in different configurations and they have a hodge podge of parts, some with drop in hammers, some with reworked stickers, with acceptable results all the way around.

That's the general consensus I've been getting. Still a little hesitant about filing parts in my trigger group. Idk, need to watch a couple more tutorials on it. I'll have to wait until I get my parts I've already ordered and see how it shoots. I'll probably just wait until I have money for the Kidd kit.

Definitely using my 10/22 as an intro to gun modification. Decided I'm not really buying anything until I've built up my current collection.

If you are slightly hesitant then do not do it. Order you a drop in hammer and do the JB Weld mod and you'll be amazed at difference. BTW how old I'd your gun, is it the metal or plastic trigger group?

30yrs ago I took my trigger apart and polished every part with 320 sand paper and then 600grid. The trigger is a lttlle over 4.5lbs but is smoother than my 10/22T and shoots better.

Seems, the newer the gun, the crappier the triggers are.

I have done all of thee above. I can get a very nice trigger out of the factory trigger groups. It will break nice at around 2lbs. only down side is without buying an after market trigger, there is no overtravel adjustment. (I know I could build one, but it's not worth the $29 to just buy one that already has it) No OT adjustment doesnt really bother me in a .22 so I dont wory with it. Like most people, I prefer the aluminum trigger group, but honestly I get the same results with the old style vs the new. Anyone can shorten a barrel, but you must have provisions to square and re-crown.

Mine is an older 10/22 with a metal trigger group. A while back I did a trigger job on the stock trigger and got it down to 2.5 lbs of pull. I polished al the trigger parts and reshaped the notch on the hammer. It made it much better. Add a Shooters Ridge (made by Green Mountain), Hogue over mold stock, leupold scope, and a bipod and it's a great shooter. Tonight I replaced the stock extractor with a volquartsen extractor, a volquartsen charge handle, and a bolt buffer. I can't wait to get it out and give it a try.

I shot it this weekend and hit a 14" x 14" steel target at 400 yards.
