"Best" way to achieve black rims?

Have them dipped in a pattern. Get CF wheels ha.

Depends on what you use the truck for. If you chip powder coat, you have to get it re-done or try to patch it with paint.

My painted rims have last great - First time I've had to touch them up was recently and I painted them in 2008. Only reason: Rocks in the mud I was driving/getting stuck in. On road use and/or light offroading...Paint will be cheaper and last just fine.

 

Current wheels are derped... and falling apart a month after application!

 

Wouldn't you have to do some serious damage to the rims to chip the powder coat?

Main use is my daily driver + utility of a light truck as I've been stationed all over the country.

 

I sold my 17" TRD's winter wheels with a bit of road rash to a guy with a 4runner. He said he will just plast-derp them for winter. I tried sanding one down with plans of spray painting them, but it was too time consuming and did not go well at all for me.

I replaced these with used 17" FJ wheels that were powder-coated black by the previous owner. I myself had them on the truck since October and they are still holding up great. Actually when washed, they look just like the day I got them. I'm much happier this way and would definitely consider (and prefer) poweder-coating another set if needed.

Good info on this thread, I plan on powdercoating my stock rims. I read on another thread that the centercaps are Plastic so I can't powdercoat them, Anyone got any insight on this? 13' tacoma trd sport.

The most durable would a a gloss powder coat.

But they are hard to keep looking good.

I went with a 30% gloss or basically matt.

Cost me $60 a wheel for sand blast and powder coat per wheel.

Call around and find a good powercoater that does a good job.

Oh yeah the center caps. Either have a body shop paint them or use model/plastic paint.

 

mine are rustolium flat black. still looking great after a year but i would suggest a satin or semi-gloss if it is available in the big "professional" can shown earlier.

no regrets at all with my decision. even the plastic center caps still look good

 

i wouldnt powder coat. cast aluminum wheels can "anneal" around 300 degrees F, and their structural integrity will be compromised if heated above this temperature. typical powder coating ovens are normally around 425 degrees.

 

It is safe to do once. But multiple times would not be a good idea.

I meant center caps are spray painted, wheels are powdercoated.

 

i wouldn't even risk doing it once. unless whoever is doing it has the proper $100k oven that fluctuates the casting core temperature, keeping it out of critical range. Same way from factory.

 

I thought the stock wheels were steel? Aren't these ones steel?

Those are steelies and come standard on base trim trucks. SR5 and TRD's come with alloys in either 16", 17" or 18".

 

My SR5 came with the steel ones... but they should be fine getting the powder coat, right?

I'm sure they would charge a lot more than that at our local powdercoat shop tho.
