Lifter Noise on 2009 V6

I have noticed what appears to be lifter noise (clanking) on my engine, noticed it shortly after buying it. I have just over 500 miles on it and was hoping it would go away (wishfull thinking) and cuirious if this is normal. The engine could be hot or cold, makes no difference. It's only annoying that it may be out of adjustment and causing undue wear or contributing to less gas mileage. I will probably live with it until time for the first oil change, take it to the dealer (free oil changes) and make them listen to it first and try to explain what's going on. If it's not better when I leave the dealership I plan to install a high quality synthetic motor oil but I would expect that to make things louder, but overall engine wear would be better.

Any thoughts on the lifter noise, is this normal for this new engine?

Now that sounds like something I've said all this week to a customer dealing with a software delivery.

Also, Thanks to all who replied. Guess I'll not give this another though until I get to the dealers and I'll still ask them. I already figured they would say it was normal.

Same noise on my 09, took it in three times, each time told it was normal. Trying to ignore it.

 

I guess the good thing is to have it documented that you took it in three times that way if it does fail you at least have something to fall back on. I will still take mine in and see what they say. I'm expecting the same answer but at least it will be documented.

I hadn't left the lot yet before I noticed the noise. I pulled right into the service bay where the service manager checked it and said it was the injectors. It's the noisiest Toy engine I have ever had with less than 200K miles on it.

Hmm.... I have the same issue but and hoped it was just the engines "way of sounding" and not the lifters. Glad I'm not going crazy.

I noticed the noise as well. Not a huge issue, but the noisiest 'new' engine I've heard outside of any Ducati ever made.

 

So, the engine is a 1GR-FE and am I correct in stating this is an Intake VVT-i only engine? I have the 2009 model.

I have found some literature in the form of the engine manual and did not see any shims listed for the valve train. I didn't see any adjustments of any sort. Maybe that is why it's noisy? I'm sure there is an adjustment.

So there has been "lifter noise" since 2003 when this engine was first introduced?

You are correct. I downloaded a FSM for a 2006 Tacoma with the 1GR-FE engine. Here is the adjustment procedure for the valves and very true, no shims but the lifter cap is replaced with the proper height cap.
