Taco 4WD Question

I've been shopping for a small 4X4 pickup for on and off road use. I'm trying to narrow down a year range too look at. I don't like "push button" 4WD systems nor am I particularly interested in torsion bar suspension.

I've done a bit of reading and can't quite seem to nail down an answer to a question I have.

- Did Toyota produce a 4x4 pickup (for the US Market) with a fully mechanical 4WD system after they went to the coil sprung IFS?

AND/OR

- Were Tacoma's ever avialable with OEM manual hubs?

 

I believe late 95 and early 96 are the only 2 years that had OEM manual hubs and I'm not even positive about that (it is relatively easy to convert a 1st tacoma to manual hubs if you can find the parts around though). I know that a lot of 1st gen's (95-04) have manual T-cases. The later 1st gens (not sure when it changed) went from vacuum operated ADD's to electronic ADD's though. All 2nd gens (2005-present) are fully electronic Tcases and ADD.

 

Tacomas from 96 thru 2000 had manual hubs as standard equipment.
The ADD hubs were optional, and most buyers must have ordered it,
since most trucks seem to have ADD. I looked a long time before I
found one with manual OEM Aisin hubs. No push buttons for 4wd.

 

I can only speak for 96, but my wife's Tacoma had the manual hubs as well as the shifter for 2-4 wheel.

 

I used to have a 99 with manual hubs.

 

Thx! That's the info I was looking for. The KISS principal applies to wheelin far more than many other activities. "Convienence" features can be a PITA to fix trailside in the mud. I suspect the dealers ordered most of thier trucks with ADD to pad the sale price. Since most 4's never leave the pavement it went relaively unnoticed.

 

My 97 has manual Aisen locking hubs and a shift lever. no buttons.

 

I was at the dealer parts counter the other day, and was told that only the 4-cylinder models came with manual hubs. This was a surprise to me.

Anyone out there have a V6 with factory manual hubs (non-conversions) ?

 

My 98 v6 5 speed had manual hubs on it.
