Our family friend has a raptor and is afraid to hit dirt in it. It is practically a street truck and will maybe see dirt once in a life time. He gets free gas from his company. I am jelly, although we did take it to sycamore once and I drove it the whole time, because he promised we would off road it once.

 

The Wife Says:

400 ci, Turbo 400 trans-floor shift 3 speed, vacuum advance on distributor, dwell spec 30 degrees with no more than 3 degrees variance, ignition timing 12 BTDC.

checked dwell at idle (850rpm) - 38, maybe 1 degree variance
carefully removed old points and condenser
compared parts, then installed new points and condenser as is
reassembled distributor rotor and cap
car wouldn’t start
adjusted points 1/3 turn, car started
checked dwell at idle - (idle now at 800rpm) 31, maybe 1 degree variance
checked timing, ~18 BTDC
adjusted back to 12 BTDC
initially the car seemed to idle better, no random misfiring anymore

I went for a test drive.
Turned out of the neighborhood, now it wont up shift. Rpms just kept climbing, so I let off the throttle. After rpms dropped a little, it shifted into 2nd.

I lightly gave it more throttle again, same thing, wouldn't shift up to Drive.
I did the same thing with the throttle and it finally shifted to Drive.
Got it back to the house. The trans gave a loud clunk when I shifted to park. Shifted to reverse, even louder clunk. Shifted to Drive, same clunk. Checked the trans fluid in driveway (while running of course), about 1 pt low, added fluid. Went for a test drive again, same deal. Checked fluid again on a little more level surface, added one more pt. I added 1 qt trans fluid total.

Last month I changed the trans filter/fluid (not a complete flush). The Neutral safety switch might need to replaced – has a hard time starting in Park, usually start it in Neutral. I have to turn the car off while in Drive, then shift to Park. After you take your foot off the break, if the wheels don’t roll back enough, the ignition won’t turn all the way back to remove the key.

Mind you, there were no trans issues prior to changing the points and condenser. I'm not very familiar with auto trans. Does the trans depend on the vacuum advance? Should I go through and check my vacuum hoses? Could the Neutral safety switch cause something like this?
