What is the real payload capacity of our trucks???

This was just over 1200 lbs bilstein 5100's in the back stock springs no tsb and LT tires. Worked out fine.

Yes it is BS Gade1000. I hauled 1700 Lbs in the bed with my 3 leaf pack with no ill effects.

 

Lets start off by saying if your work or play time requires you to move a lot of weight or payload- get a truck to match your needs. The beauty of our trucks is it is a "truck", that can do many things. And, like any truck, it can do more then the numbers tell you a few times here and there. But if you regularly carry X amount of weight, get the right truck for the job. For the simple reasons of Safety, convenience, and longevity of your vehicle. Those who tow with the V-6 close to max rating know you only get about 10-11 mpg or so. If you drove a F-150 for example, you might get less mpg overall when empty, but towing a 5000# load regularly you will save not only on fuel but wear and tear on the truck. And without the stress of driving with the wrong truck for the job.
I bought a Tacoma to do many things, I have a 16' fishing skiff to tow around, my wife and I like to take our bikes with us everywhere we go out of town, carrying camping gear or beach gear, Home depot runs, dump runs, etc.. All of which the Tacoma is perfect for. And, one time I loaded up 1200# of bagged ice in the 4 banger, back when it had the 3 leaf set up, and knew I would not want to do that often with this truck. My advice, if your carrying/towing close to the max rating of our trucks routinely, get a bigger truck.

 

Everytime these threads about hauling and towing come up, there are the people who do ridiculous things and "have no problems". The Tundra was used to tow the space shuttle at roughly 150,000 pounds. They "had no problems". That would put the Tacoma at about 90,000 pounds towing capacity. I'm sure somebody will think that's a fine idea

 

At least 1700lbs in my prerunner. 3 lead pack, procomp shocks. 3/4 tank of gas and cab full of tools. Drove over hour and a half. No problems with handling. Trucks can generally handle quite bit more then the recommended payload. I only did this one time, a regular basis I would not recommend

On July 19/12 I confessed here to having abused my bone-stock DoubleCab TRD Off-Road Taco by driving 14 miles carrying 1 cubic yard of sand and three passengers plus me. Let's be conservative and say that was 3500 lbs.

Result now, 5000 miles later (all on-road), is that the front passanger wheel bearing is a bit sloppy. Total mileage on this truck is 100,600 and this is the first sign on wear on it (other than the fragile paint and mudflaps, and squawking A/C compressor).

Seeing a stock Tundra pull shuttle Endeavour was inspiring, no?

 

Here is a little update of the effects of loading my Tacoma,,
-650/700 lbs. genset w/all my other welding equipment everyday around the city..
It's a heavy load for the suspension,, i'm always almost touching the bump stops,,, Now when I unload everything the rear of the truck sags down on left side only, by about 1.5".
So my first upgrade was 17" LT tires (bf t/a), this helped take out the "sway" when loaded on the highway.
Next will be the Firestone air baloon suspension for the rear.

You obviously do not have a clue. The original post I responded to stated the capacity is 5 pounds. Which is in Fact bull shit.

Now lets analyze your load.

You say " 600 - 700 lb genset plus all your other welding equipment " which weights what? Lets say about 150 lbs.

So splitting the difference between 600 - 700 lbs is 650 plus the 150 of other welding gear would be 800 lbs then there is you. A normal sized dude would be about 200 lbs add that in and you are at or near the rated maximum capacity.

650 lbs + 150 lbs + 200 lbs = 1000 lbs So you have driven your truck at max capacity every day for 93K miles.

You're right it is a heavy load for a half ton truck ( 1000 Lbs ). Of course if you are heavier than 200 lbs or you other gear is more than 150 lbs or your estimate is light on the genset then the load would be even greater.

How do you balance the load as the Genset is probably the heaviest item. Is it loaded on the left or right or centered in the bed?

I would say you have gotten pretty good service out of those springs considering they were abused daily for 93K miles.

So yes even by your own admission as explained above it is Bull Shit!

 

The stock leafs suck balls

 

I carried a pallet of marble 1sqft tiles...I asked the place how much it weighed, they said around 800...after unloading it the actual weight was 1300+change

I caught it too late to go back deal with the tile place, so my TSB leafs are now bent and my truck sags with just over 200lbs in the bed

It never bottomed out on the 14mile trip home up and down a mountain.

If I loaded the weight evenly into the whole bed one little box at a time, it would have been fine.

watching the forklift lower the pallet into my bed and watch the wheel clearance drop was pretty sickening

 

You mean I can tow half a space shuttle with my taco? Awesome. I'm gonnna try this next time I find a space shuttle lying around.

Seriously though, I don't pay too much attention to the towing capacity. Its more of a general guidline.

 

got the TSB 4 leaf spring and loaded the bed with 600lbs of concrete today. the truck did fine!

 

I'm completing my custom sled deck and will report back in about a week's time. I built an over the bed deck out of aluminum. The deck will be about 240 lbs, ramp is 70 and sled is about 550 wet. I'm planning on having a few things under the deck as well so will be pushing a tad over the limit with passengers. I've also got an OME/Dakar setup with airbags which I hope will compensate.

I thought about buying a bigger truck but the problem is that full size are too wide to get to my parents cabin. My bro has a Ram 2500 Diesel and doesnt fit in the 10 km long trail leading to it. Larger trucks are also pretty heavy and destroy off road trails when wet. It could be fun for the first times but if you need the trail to get somewhere often, it's a pain to have to rebuild it everytime. I'm also going to use my truck to work (I'm an exploration geologist) and bigger trucks are just too cumbersome for some of the tight spots i get myself into sometimes. Trucks should be made to be able to fill the bed with dirt. I understand that a light version should exist but an HD option should be made available for the Tacoma, especially after experiencing the load capacity of the Hilux!!!

 

sounds like a lot of weight 860ish + passengers and supplies?

I see 400lbs of people and supplies being at the max payload.....thats not much

Keep tuned in for things u havent beefed up.....suspension is only a small portion that makes up payload capacity....be safe.

ur numbers may be lower.........thats based off my 2006 access cab v6

 

How much different Hilux from Taco, from what i've been reading they are very close. Hilux capacity is 2000 lb. Is it possible toyota is being on safe side telling us 1050 lb. knowing we will overload

 

I had 1500 lbs in my truck and it was fine, I wouldn't reccomend anything over a ton but i've seen some tacomas haul crazy boats and trailers

 

Part of the whole point of Tacoma was to give the griping American crowd softer more road worthy springs. and that's what we are stuck with. Hilux on the other hand is like a small 3/4 ton, stout and more payload. Toyota isn't telling us less to be safe, the springs are really that different.
