    Well, when I was in high school, the house had one phone, in the kitchen, hardwired to the wall.
    My parents flipped out when I installed a duplex jack in my bedroom... they were sure the phone company was going to charge them for the 2nd "line".

    Even pagers were not affordable for Joe Average.
    I'd been through two major career path changes before my first cell phone... and I've got another 18 years to work before I can even think of retirement.

    You had to have graduated in '91.... when I worked at Radio Shack in '86, we sold pagers. Not digital, but they had up to 4 distinctive beep patterns depending on which of the 4 assigned numbers were called, so the wife would call 555-1111, boss would call 555-2222, school would call 555-3333, and mom would call 555-4444.

    It was better than having to call an answering service.
