4LO-Trac & ABS Kill Switch - Why/Why Not?

I noticed Brady and Erik have a few things mixed up on the 2005-2008 stock Tacoma Off Roads. Here's a link regarding 2005-2008 ATRAC/TRAC/DAC/HAC/VSC modes...

Benson X's mod (the OP) is for 2009+ models standard with TRAC/VSC (NO ATRAC/DAC/etc.) with the vacuum brake booster. You can't compare the two.

 

Nice that sounds like an awesome setup. It does seem similar. I got my info from someone who did it on an 05 OR so I bet if you put power to your switch then you would probably end up with what I have. Having switches like that are great. Thinking about all this is making me want to do the locker anytime mod.

I'll check to see if ABS comes on when I can later on. I think I am stuck in modded mode, without ABS, VSC or ATRAC. So if I didn't blow a fuse or anything and ABS deff doesn't come on then I am thinking it should only be a problem with my wiring right? Thats alot better than having something actually blown.

 

Fixed I meant to say TRAC not VSC is still on in 4Lo, which is basically ATRAC at that point.
Also your thread says that in 4Hi ATRAC is engaged instead of TRAC. I haven't experimented much with it, but I believe that ATRAC only functions in 4Lo and is just a much more aggressive version of TRAC.



And yeah, if you are stuck in modded mode than your wiring is definitely grounding out the locker signal somewhere.

 

Yeah I am still a little confused about the differences in traction modes as you go from 05's to 09's, but I think the mod I did puts ATRAC on in 4HI and 4LO including when the locker is engaged. It deff takes ABS and VSC off all the time when the switch is on. I must have just plain old TRAC in 2HI. Either way right now I have no traction systems till I figure out what went wrong.

 

I said it's ATRAC in 4hi, because it is ATRAC.



As you can see above, ATRAC is on in both 4wd modes. You feel that it's "more aggressive" because the extra torque from low-range requires extra braking power to stop the wheel. It only feels more aggressive.

Anyways, sorry for derailing the thread further. Just wanted to point out some things.

 

I meant more agressive as in it prevents wheelspin more aggressively. In 4hi i can spin the crap out of 2 tires before it really starts to engage. In 4lo it engages almost as soon as there is wheelspin. I've read somewhere ATRAC is only active when moving slow, like 5mph or less. I'll have to try to find that when I'm on my computer.

Ok I think I have the whole TRAC vs ATRAC thing figured out now. I was mixing it up with the 09+ system.

Now I want to try an 09+ system just to see if their ATRAC is better than ours. In all the times I have used it, it has been pretty much useless. Didn't seem to perform any better than just open diffs and was way outperformed by my lockers.

Yes, the ABS Kill will disable VSC completely. The YWM DOES NOT disable VSC, since it relies on the VSC/TRAC to provide traction to the slipping wheel.

 

2009 + OR 4x4

 

Okay sweet, took my truck to the dealership and had them recalibrate the VSC sensor but didn't make any difference. Then started turning off the VSC by holding the switch down for 5 seconds but it still was kicking on around corners. I have a 2010 4x4 double cab without the locking diff. but has the VSC this mod should work for mine right?

 

You held the VSC button in while stopped for approx 5 seconds till the VSC OFF light is the only one illuminated , correct ?

 

Oh yeah. Its off. I learned to do that first thing when I bought the truck and took it offroading and realized I couldn't throw a roost.

 

Also once that switch is installed can I leave it off all the time? Meaning does it reset itself when you turn the truck off? The reason I ask is because my wife drives the truck occasionally so I just wanted to know if I need to tell her to flip the switch before she drives it. I really don't want that VSC going off while she is driving it.

I have the same issue as you and drive in VSC OFF mode all the time and have never had it kick back on under normal conditions

 

That would mainly depend on the switch you use (momentary or on/off). With the switch I used in the write-up, it stays off all the time when activated, since it is breaking the circuit.

 

Yeah, I talked to a guy at 4 wheel parts about it yesterday. And he said that it can be multiple things going on to make it go off. He said that when they do lifts on the Tacomas that the steering wheel has to be dead center when aligned and also that when he does the alignments that he sets the toe in at 1/4" and they haven't had any problems they also recommended getting the VSC sensor calibrated after the lift as you guys suggested. I might just take it to 4 wheel parts and have them align it and see if they can fix it. I'm still gonna install the switch because I really don't care for the ABS in the snow. Almost threw me into a tree the first time I tried stopping in the snow. Not cool.

 

I agree, I only use ABS if it's bone-dry outside.
