Is there a difference in size between a cap that fits a gen 1 extended cab and a gen 2 extended cab? I want to get a cheap cap for my gen one off Craigslist but want to make sure it's going to fit.

    Any info would be great.
    Thanks

Pretty sure they are completely different bed dimensions.

1st gen xtra cabs are 6'
2nd gen xtra cabs are 6'+ and probably a bit wider too.

I second that. I believe you are the guy with the "new to you" black shiny extended cab Tacoma. Congrats. Remember that a regualr cab (1st gen) cap will fit your truck too. HOWEVER, it doesn't fit "cleanly."

The regular cab C-pillar is completely vertical. However, you'll notice the C-Pillar on your extended cab has a slight rake forward. So, if you install a regular cab shell on an extended cab, there will be uneven gap between the shell and cab. The gap will get larger the higher up the C-Pillar you go.

I would look for an ARE or a SnugTop. I have a SnugTop (I use it in the fall for hunting and camping) and it's awesome. Don't forget to get a BedRug.

    Good luck.

How do you guys use the camper shell for camping? I mean with the 5.5 foot bed is it even possible to close the camper shell and sleep in the back?

I end up sleeping on my side which means I slightly bend at the knees and I have plenty of clearance. You can also sleep caddy-cornered which gives you more room. I mainly use my shell for:

    1) Hauling my canoe which is nearly impossible any other way.

    2) Throwing my hunting stuff (guns, treestand, clothes - I'm a scent nazi) and it keeps it from getting wet and muddy.

    3) Putting my backpacking equipment and dog in for long trips when I go backpacking.

    4) Sleeping in for car camping or when I'm just an extra tight-ass and don't want to pay for a hotel on fishing trips or hunting trips.

I got a smoking deal on my SnugTop. I paid a guy $100 because it had a busted side window. The busted side window was $175 from SnugTop (fine, I still only have $275 in it) then I paid a buddy $250 for painting it. $525 in a SnugTop is a stinking deal and was one of the best bang/buck investments I've made.

I'm like 5'9", wife is a bit shorter, and, with the Bedrug, the bed is very comfortable. We slept in it in Dec. at Death Valley: tried to set up the tent and it almost blew out of our hands! We did leave the tailgate down, for better ventilation. Put the tent and other stuff behind the seats.
