Hi ISO, between f/2.8-f/4 and an exposure of less than 20s or so. At 20s you'll start to see movement in the stars. Oh, and noise reduction (in camera) turned on.

I use a couple of apps to tell me where the Milky Way will be in the night sky. I also try and pay attention to the moon since it's pretty bright-there's an app for that too. Star Walk and Moon Seeker are the two I use.

For dark sky stuff, you really need to have a good solid tripod to keep things steady.

It's actually a bit bigger than I thought. Signed for the place today. Just from pacing it, it's about a 10 x 14? Head shots and half body are fine. I'm not expecting to be able to work miracles here or anything.

Ian thanks for stepping in and explaining.

Blackdawg and bus driver thanks for the compliments and listen to what Ian is saying he's right on the money!

Another thing you want to look into is to get a wide angle lens. Most if not all of those shots were shot at 24mm. The wider the angle the longer exposure you can get without the star trails (star movement) which results in a cleaner picture.

Location is a big factor too. You want to go places like the middle of the desert or the top of a mountain to get as far away from city light pollution as you can. It will help you get a shot of all those stars.

Looking forward to seeing some of those night shots! Make sure you share with us what you get.

What trail leads up there? Is it the one that's right next to the lookout parking lot, well it's on the other side of the street actually.

If you're in that lot where you took the picture from, cross the street. There will be a trail on the hill side of the tunnel wall. You'll see it for sure. If you follow the trail, you will be almost right above the center of the tunnel (you cannot see the trail from the roadway).

That'll work. If you need the full body, just setup in the living room. Tape your seamless to the wall with gaffer's tape.

Ok, yeah I know where that trail is I have just never hiked it very far.

Are those first two pictures taken with a full moon out? There is a whole lot of light for it being night time.

    Excellent pictures btw!!

The first one is a full moon. The second was pretty dark out but it's also a long exposure (several minutes).

The moon can have a dramatic effect on things. In the right setting, it almost looks like daylight.

    Thanks for the compliment!

That picture looks very good and very little noise for such a long exposure.

What equipment do you use? How long have you been shooting?

An alternative method to achieve the same effect is to utilize an intervalometer, either internal or external, to take multiple, relatively short exposures, at timed intervals, then use a software, such as Starstacker, and put them together in post processing. The D7K has one built-in.
