The other purpose of the resi is to act like an accumulator and affect the compression and rebound of the shock.

 

Just to clarify......light racing upper control arms will work just fine with extended travel coilovers. the larger ball joint will articulate further than the shock can extend.

 

I'm aware, but I don't think it would affect that significantly enough to matter, and I'd rather have the clearance.

Think about where King and Fox mount their resis. Consider if the resi was on the backside of the same mounting bracket setup. I'd love to get 2.5" more clearance in the wheel well, and I'm sure there's plenty of airflow to make increased proximity to the engine a negligible factor.

 

They are all good. Pick a color or go for the one with the one that fits your budget.

If your going wider then that, you already know you need to modify a good deal of the truck and the suspension set up. In those cases I wouldn't want an off the shelf shock and would recommend getting something built.

You can easily get a custom hose length and hose fittings in order to mount Kings anywhere you want. That's the nice thing about getting Kings from a reputable vendor vs from buying suspension from a warehouse. You tell the vendor what your needs and specs are and they build your suspension accordingly from their wide range of parts.

Currently Icon and Fox do not offer a good choice of spring weight options for a 05+ Tacoma. One of the local guys I know had to get King 700# springs on his Fox 2.5's. I know that Icon's also does not offer a higher weight spring needed for a Tacoma with full armor/winch. I'm not up to date on their valving options, but I'm sure that's not an issue.

Even the "vehicle specif" brands like Icon can't fine tune valving and spring weight in order to sell one model of a off the shelf shock that is set up perfectly for a light/fast Tacoma pre-runner and at the same time a slow/heavy armored rock crawler. It's just not possible. This is why I never listen to people when they say "My Icons are designed specifically for my truck and your Kings aren't". The funny thing is they couldn't be more wrong and in most cases it's the exact opposite.

Icon FTMFW! Think they put the most work in as far as tuning them to the right truck.....not just off the shelf! I know the low end compression can be adjusted on a re-valve as that's what most people tend to complain about. Personally though, I really like the firmness of the digressive valving...much more stable feeling!

Acts as cooling and makes them more consistent throughout there travel I was told!

FTW! My Camburg BJ's (no pun intended) will work well too! Nice build by the way, that truck is sick! Those "off the shelf" Icon's seem tuned pretty good for having extra weight up front!

Yeah, but wider's not the issue...taller is.

Cutting and pounding sheet metal is no big deal. But larger diameter = greater scrub radius. So when the time comes, I'll be dealing with probably cutting and new wheels.

Icon can valve basically anywhere you want, but yeah, spring weight is kind of a PITA because they use a slightly shorter custom spring than the other two. Trying to shoehorn a 16" spring on an Icon setup results in binding.

That said, they come factory with 650lb springs which is adequate (just barely) for a loaded front end. 700lb would be better.

Yeah, the customization comes from the person building the truck, not the products going into it.

So far, super happy with my Icons, and I'm gonna run with 'em til I'm not...at which point it will probably be time for not only new C/Os, but new links as well

I know this is an old thread. But where do Radflo's fit in the group of these shocks?

 

Although I do not have experience with Radflo, I know they are considered one of the upper echelon shock manufacturers and should be able to offer the same tunability and customization as the rest. I am considering them for my next set of rear shocks b/c King and Fox cannot offer what I am looking for at a similar price point. Others please chime in.

 

I was about to go with them. But decided to join the Icon train. Ordered a set today

 

35's should be okay as far as the resi is concerned...the cab mount and inner fender plastics may need some trimming though.

Is the OEM replacement King an extended travel shock like the extended travel Icon is???

 

No, but DSM offers an ext travel king. Although Sonny says it's only 1/8" at the wheel.
