Front Diff oil?

I changed my rear diff and trans case oils, but couldn't loosen the damn fill plug in the front diff (glad I tried before draining) Is it ok to have new fluid rear and t/c and not in the front Diff, or am I going to mess something up? thanks

 

you should be fine, but you might wanna keep a schedule of this, and change all at once

 

I had the same thing happen to me at my last oil change. Changed the rear end, transfer, & engine oil, but for the life of me, I could not get the fill plug off for the front diff! I started to work on it, but that hex socket started to slip on me so I didn't go any farther. I didn't want to strip that thing out. So I'm gonna give it another try this weekend when I change out the engine oil. Wish me luck!

 

can someone tell me the size of that damn hex?

 

Is it 24mm like the others?

 

It's 10mm or 12mm hex, can't remember - anyone else?.....24mm socket is for the rear I know that much....

 

Yeah I don't remember who but another guy had the same problem on the fill plug. He couldn't get it off now matte what he tried! I remember he was really pissed. Not sure what he did finally to get it off.

 

No its a hex, the rest are garden variety 24mm sockets

 

10 mm socket...had to buy a set just to get the one.

 

So did you change out your front diff oil as well?

 

Front diff and driveshaft grease are the only things left on my 30k that I couldnt get done

 

indeed, did it about 6k ago....along with plugs, etc.

 

Any secret on getting off the front diff plug?

 

my next attempt is going to include spraying that thing with PB blaster with the zeal i had on losing my virginity.

 

but this time i am NOT going to tell the fill plug I want to just put to tip of my tool in

 

uhhhh.......use an extension, and put your ass in it, if you will. It wasn't that hard, and I am by no means mechanically inclined.

 

fixed it, SICKO!!!

 

long extension, long handle ratchet (or cheater) 3-5 lb. deadblow hammer. i thought i was gonna pull my truck off the lift when i first tried it. held everything tight and gave it a few good whaps, and presto.

I recently greased the drive shafts. The rear 2 u-joints took 1 pump and the grease squished out. The front u-joint took 3 pumps until anything squirted out. I guess its good I greased that front u-joint.
