I have an extra Gary Fisher women's frame/fork hanging in the garage but it is for 700c, not 26" wheels.

I don't hang around too many women that mountain bike but I wonder how they feel about a 29er mountain bike. I guess if they hadn't ridden a 26" mtb it wouldn't matter but going from a 26" to a 29" for a woman would be a big jump I would assume.

We get that a lot! Especially on the trails. It's usually something like, "you two rode that bike up this trail? You're nuts!"

Mostly my wife is nuts. For me, its just riding a really long bike (that is actually REALLY stable). Most switchbacks are not rideable... We'd have to figure out how to trackstand and hop, but that's not in the works.

We actually do some racing on the tandem. Longer XC stuff 50, 80 100 mile stuff - maybe we are nuts!

do you guys think a clamp on chain guide mount would work?one that attaches around the BB. Ive got a press fit bb so the standard mounts dont work and my ex8 is the rear before they came standard. I think i saw one for some giant bikes somewhere but i dont remember where.

I want to go 1x10 but idk about using a seat tube mount chainguide with the bionicon...hmmm

I was just reading up on these, well pretty much any pedal from Time seems to be a good choice.

Im thinking either the Time alum. or the strong mountain

    http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/11...65-Pedals/Mountain/Time-ATAC-Alium-Pedals.htm

    http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/23...ls/Mountain/Time-Z-Strong-Mountain-Pedals.htm

Ive never riden clipless before so I like the option to ride it as a platform as well.
Any opinions on shoes? I dont really want to wear cleats though

If you choose either of those pedals, you will want to run cleats. If you don't want to run cleats, look at a big platform type pedal with good grip. I prefer to keep my shins "Blood Free", so I clip in, no matter the situation.

I've always been happy with Specialized shoes, but they can get pretty pricey.

yea, yall are right. I should just do it "right" the first time. haha I need to hit up the closest spec. dealer, about 50 mins away, and try out some shoes. How are the sizes? about the same as your normal shoes?

nope 2011 was the last year the fuel did not have ISCG mounts unfortunately.
I have heard from everyone that times are the best. I am using some now, after about 2 years they are done, atleast the left pedals is i think. I went to the shop by school, which is where i normally ride and they said that times can break some times. I think my problem is that I hit them on rocks in low speed technical stuff. when I was riding mostly at home I had no problem because there are less rocks.

Other than that I loved them while i had them, my friend had trouble getting used to SPDs and I was using times like i had been all my life. I would definitely buy them again. Im thinking of trying the time XRoc, the platform is a bit bigger to offer more support and hopefully more protection from rocks

Most of the big brands will mold the shoe to your foor for free now too. (Oven Method) - Shimano is a decent shoe for that.

Sizes are same like any other shoes, they vary from make model manufacturer. You really should go to a shop and try a couple on.

Your feet will swell while riding too. Thats a factor most don't take in to consideration when buying.

It's easier to clamp down and loosen up as the rides progress. Vs having your foot swell on a shoe thats too small and being in pain the whole ride.

Make sure whatever one you get you can walk around in it for 5-10 min.

Thanks for the help everyone :)
thats the only thing im worried about is that we have a lot of rocks. I know the trail pretty well so I think I will be ok though as long as I can remember to keep both pedals level

    The better coast
I am 6'2, I might be a hair big, I was told about a 19 inch frame is what to shoot for.

If I can get the price down and its not to big, I am willing to try it.

you can always check craigslist for used shoes to get an idea of the size. I don't think anyone would mind as long as you come to them so it doesn't cost the seller anything but a few minutes of their time.

Thats what I did and then a pair popped up in my size and price range and I hopped on them [IMG].

They were also road bike shoes...but same concept :p

i guess it depends how big the rocks are and how fast you are going.

if you have big rocks and high speed and you clip your pedal you might have more problems than a loose spring on the pedal haha. but smaller rocks and you will probably be fine

oh and BTW the only problem is that the springs are loose on both top and bottom. it kind of seems like it broke in the coil but is still wrap around the axle that holds the spring in which is why i think it is loose. still functional but my foot did come out when i went over a jump which scared the crap out of me haha. new cleats might help the problem

and one other thing just keep in mind that the cleats are brass so they do get worn down and need replacing. but again its been 2 years and they are still functioning

its not that they are bent. its that they are broken, like i can grab it with my fingers and wiggle it. it just doesnt hold the cleat as well anymore

yea I read that they are brass and will need to be replaced more frequently than other cleats.

I love Candys. I've had 2 sets and theyve been perfect. My old set is still in use by a friend.

Yep awesome as well. I had the cheaper atac aliums and lost an end cap and ended up retiring them. Probalby my favorite as far as retention, feel and release.
