I picked up a 07 DC at the beginning of this month. It was owned by an older couple who rarely drove it and only had 3800 miles on it when we picked it up. It has about 5200 miles on it now and I've noticed it taken several seconds to start (maybe 5-7 seconds of cranking before it turns over) on two occasions now. It's done it twice this week and only when it's been sitting at my work for about 4 hours after arriving and then when I leave for lunch. Anyone else heard of such an issue? The closest dealership is 45 minutes away, so it's not really convenient to take it in during the work week and the dealership probably would have a hard time replicating it anyways.

The ECU wont give the engine spark until a pre set oil pressure is reached. 3-4 seconds is normal. If you can time it with a stop watch (what they will do at the dealer) and make sure its cranking longer, There WAS a TSB for longer crank times, so If its much longer than 3 to 4 seconds, take it in.

Interesting...I did change the oil this weekend using 5.5 QTS of Toyota 5W-20 & a Toyota filter. I'll triple check the oil level tomorrow morning before startup.

Ok...If you have the V6 engine, You need 5w-30. That could be the reason.

mmm, I'll double check. I can't remember what the Toyota parts guy gave me. I told him I had an 07 with the 4.0L though.

If he gave you 5w-20, go back and smack him. I have read a few reports of this happening with the wrong oil weight in the enigne.

I believe we're supposed to use 5W-30... Not sure if going to that 20 will make a difference in oil pressure though.

Ok, time it with a stop watch and see how long exactly it is cranking...

Will do. It seems strange that's done it at work but never at home, etc.

this might be useless, but my old Jeep would crank for 5 seconds, not start and then on the second time I tried it would start

There is a valve near the fuel pump that is supposed to maintain some pressure in the fuel rail. If this valve leaks, to much pumping is required to get fuel pressure up. The ECU gives the pump 3 seconds to achieve the proper psi, otherwise it will never start. When I crank it the second time, the fuel has not had time to drain back and thus the pump can achieve pressure and the Jeep would start.

So, I'd suggest trying this. Crank for 3-5 seconds. Stop. Crank again. If it starts, it might be the same problem as I had.

The valve and fuel pump were integrated on the Jeep (probably the Toy too) so the ntire pump must be replaced to fix this problem.
