How Easy/Hard to replace ABS sensor on 96 Camry

Trying to help my buddy sell his car and apparently the sensor in the front passenger side is shot. How hard is it to replace something we could do at the fix it yourself shop on base? Also his E-Brake light is like permanently illuminated, any tips on that?

 

The hard part is getting the bolt and then sensor out. If it's a Texas car with little or no rust then it should not be to big a deal. Common sense is take it slow. don't snap the bolt off etc.

Check the brake fluid to be sure the reservoir is full. Pull and push on the e-brake lever to see if it will go out. Could have a bad level sensor or a bad e-brake switch to start.

Not sure off the top of my head how those WSS are attached on the camry but they typically use press in bearings so the WSS should be a totally seperate component.

They are usually bolted on right behind the brake rotor. The bolt is always something small, some are even allen heads. Spray it down with penetrant and let it sit first then loosen the bolt.

Old sensor may be a litle stuck, use a pair of channel locks to wiggle it back it forth until it's free.

Go slow, take your time. Pretty straighforward if you've worked on a car before.

 

On car from '96 and if it's never been out before, prepare to destroy the sensor to get it out. Use some Liquid Wrench on the bolt and the sensor and let it penetrate at least overnight.

 

Sensor was snapped off and stuck in hub.. no where to get a grip on it.. sprayed it was some stuff and gonna let it sit and try tapping it our or something later..

 

Well your gonna have to drill out the center section and break off the plastic housing in pieces. Watch out for the tone wheel. then get some sand paper and clean the mounting area and hole. Not fun but It's doable.

 

I had fun with that the other day.

Managed to pull it out with some pliers though.
Maybe try heating up a nail or pin and sliding it through. This would keep contaminants from entering the bearing.

 

Depending on the sensor, you may be able to deform the metal casing with a screwdriver and then pull out the sensor with some plyers.
