So which HDD do you have in the laptop now? Can you still get in to Windows with the old one? If it was me, I would get a USB enclosure for the old HDD, get the laptop running with the new HDD, and copy the file from the USB enclosure to the new HDD.

I have no idea what a USB enclosure is but I'm going to google it. The old HD functions perfectly, it just gave that fatal error message and will not pass the hard disk test. What is this file you speak of that I can copy and boot the new HD with?

A USB enclosure will let you use the HDD from the laptop as a USB drive. When you get Windows running on the new HDD, you could copy your personal files from the old HDD.

Would if matter that I already tried to get the new HD running and formatted it using the start up disks?

Nope, they should have sent you an empty HDD. All of you personal files will be on the old HDD as long as you don't format that one.

Where in Mass are you? Your best bet to find an enclosure is Micro Center. I don't think Best Buy sells them in store. Just make sure you get one for laptop HDDs (2.5") and that it matches the connection type. (IDE or SATA).

How big is your original HDD?
I believe I can help you... I have a disk duplicator that will make a exact replica of the hdd they want back. I can even help with an additional HDD depending on the size.

As for the new hdd they sent you, use stick notes to label what hdd is what. (Old and new) put the new hdd in the computer then put the DVDs in the dvdrom. Boot the computer from the DVD as it is an HP hold F10 for a boot menu when turning on the machine. Select the DVD player. Then follow the on screen prompts. This should load the OS back on the machine. If you have more then one DVD. Read to see which one is. You want something like operating system or system restore disk one.

Then once the OS is back on and loaded disk 2 to run the drivers DVD. This is done like a normal cd. Not the f10 boot.

After all Is loaded you can worry about the USB 2.5" enclosure they are referring to. This way you can copy all your personal data from the old hdd to your new hdd.

I don't mind helping. I am just down in RI. I did reply in the IT thread. Not sure if you read it. HP sells a media retention care pack you should buy rather the paying the return fee.
    Pm if you need help

Damn, I was going to try Best Buy or Circuit City. I work in Boston but live about 45 SW of the city. I'll google and find a place that sells one. I have the old HDD with me so I can bring it to the store and make sure it fits.

I don't remember how large it is but I've only got a couple gigs on it. I think it's 300Gb if i'm not mistaken. The HDD are easy to keep separated, they are different brands and the one installed has to have a jacket screwed to it first. I went through all the recovery disks and all that jazz but it never got to the point where Windows would load. The new HDD tests out alright so something must have happened during the formatting process. I have all my personal files saved to a USB so data loss isn't really an issue, it's just functionality.

I don't think Circuit City exist as a physical store anymore. The name is owned by TigerDirect now, same with CompUSA (I miss that store).

I remember you were concerned about your data when sending back the old drive. If your personal data is backed up on another USB drive that is great. You could run a full format on the old drive a couple of times. Should be good unless the FBI has something on you.
