I've done work on some pretty high end Federal buildings so I'm sure the FBI and NSA have everything they need on me :) I'm more concerned with a bored nerd at HP with nothing better to do than get my personal info and go on a spending spree at my expense.

If you were familiar with Linux at all, I would suggest "dd". It would write completely random data to overwrite any old data that exist. I'm sure similar (and free) tools exist for Windows.

If you have all your data backed up. What is the purpose of the external USB 2.5" hdd enclosure? Your concern is just getting windows installed and functional. If the new hdd in installed with the jacket. Try reinstalling windows again. If this does not work try hitting f12 at the HP logo screen and setting your BIOS back to default settings and try reinstalling.

WOW, BS thread is definetly multi-tasking ...

Pugga ,you do bring a LARGE array of information to the board...;)

Small rant and then I am back to coffee :D..

WTF do people really need to be out after 11pm except to go HOME...

The idiots we put up with this AM was WOW ....running detours to save 10-15 minutes hurt their pockets $$$$...sad we need PD to protect BIG Machines....the fools that drive threw 5-6 times to "watch"???? Come on ,go get a life...the folks that are up and need a "smoke" just as the sidewalk plow is in front of their house expecting work to STOP......
one more...awd import comes racing up behind a LARGE loader and lays on his horn all pi$$Y...ever had that "oh-Shit" moment because your a$$ is now surrouneded by tired DPW workers equipment ...luckily a PD took him to a side street instead of the "kodak" moment seconds away....Municipal sno-blowers can fill a 20 yard truck in under 8 minutes...probably cover that import in 2

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma

Have you guys all met David our local head IT guy. I have no idea what most of this means but I love the fact that we have guys like him and Jason around here that are willing to help out. Seems like you guys can help fix just about anything short of a complete computer metdown. :D

Haha, that's the problem, I don't know what most of it means either  Don't forget about Jason in there also!

As far as Linux, I have very limited experience with it but am very seriously considering loading it instead of Windows on my laptop. I had a computer in college that had the HDD partitioned. Half was dedicated to Windows, the other part was Linux. We mostly used the Linux side for when Windows crashed to hack into the Windows side and force it to reboot so it could be repaired.

I'll give everything a go tonight and report back. Thanks for the help though guys!

I didn't forget Jason. I metioned him, I didn't quote him though. :( Sorry Jason. Both you guys were talking way above my head there.

Kinda keeping on the subject. My son Justin has some money for a laptop, he does play some online games but nothing that is too hard to run. I like my Lenovo but what do you guys think is a OK laptop for him around $450? Any things to keep in mind?

I would not go for HP and not just from my experience with them. My company switched from Lenovo to HP recently and they have all been crapping out left and right. Our estimating department all got new HP laptops and out of the 11 they got, within the first 6 months 8 of them had complete HDD failures. Mine made it 11 months before the HDD completely crapped out. When it's up and running, it works great! It's quick, the screen is nice and big but this HDD failure seems to be common and come on unprovoked.

    Well Mike
It does seem like you are doing everything right. Backing up your data is a practice many folks do not do. For that alone you are in good shape.

It also seems like you are very security conscious. Most of our VP's are this way. Which I like and understand very well. On our servers we Department of Defense wipe if it spins up, degauss, then require a certificate of destruction for each hdd. With our desktops/servers we buy the media retention care pack from HP ($99). This allows us to keep our hdds when a faulty drive is found.

The hirens boot cd I spoke of earlier can be loaded from a USB drive or cd and allows for many many options. Active kill disk and DBAN are 2 well known disk wiping programs on the hirens cd to overwrite all the data on the disk many times over. But there are many many more under the hard drive tools section. This would be great option for you so you know, no one else in digging through your files.

If HP is giving you a hard time. Give them a call with your case number and let them know you are having issues loading software on the new hdd with the provided instructions. This gives you a noted on file that you are still having issues with that case. Being honest HP is so big the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. ( meaning tech support and billing) also. Write down your return tracking number that is on the new label on/in the box. This is your proof you have sent it back.

I have read many of your posts on here and I believe you will be able to figure it out but if you find you require additional help we are here.
    David
