Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.

My favorite is Ruger P95 (9mm). Just fits my hand better than most others I've tried.

My vote, 1911. Too heavy to carry and one of the best shooting gun models I've shot, so makes a great "gun in the nightstand" weapon.

Depends on what you are looking for? I have a Glock 21 .45 with Hornady hollow points for home defense...way to big to carry tho, but also just bought a S&W BodyGuard 9with built in laser) .380 for my carry weapon. The Ruger LCP is also a nice small .380 for carrying. IMHO tho, the BEST home defense is a 12 gauge with 00 Buck!

If you're set on a semi-auto, any service pistol, barring a few from manufacturers that have QC problems, should work for home defense. I personally use an M&P 9mm, but Glocks, H&Ks and others, provided the example proves reliable, work just as well. The .40 is kind of a bastard caliber that offers better barrier penetration at the expense of snappier recoil—which hampers sight tracking between shots—and lower capacity. Go to a suitable range and rent a few to try them for yourself. Keep in mind that it's difficult to evaluate a pistol by firing only a few rounds through it. Try to get some substantial time in with the choices on your short list before you make a final decision.

The important thing to remember is that it's the Indian, not the arrow. If you choose to be armed be sure to be trained, and practice what you have learned. The skills required for effective shooting, especially with a pistol, diminish with disuse, so budget for practice ammo and range time.

Birdshot is a poor choice for personal defense in lieu of other options. If you're going to rely on a shotgun to stop a person from harming you, get some buck in that thing. The problem with buckshot is that instead of having one projectile to account for every time you pull the trigger, you have 5-9 to worry about. Long guns also present other concerns, specifically regarding movement in structures.

If I had my druthers, I'd likely use a short-barreled, suppressed AR, but that's not an option for me at this time.

And just so this missive doesn't seem out of place in this thread:

Lol, idk haha my cuzzin haz a Glock u shuld try it works awesome i also shot a desert eagle .50 it wuz badass u culd use one but hard to find shells. get a pump shotgun the sound it makes will scare ne one. 1 pump=one bad guy peepee in pants.

Well when my house got broken into last November, they stole his Glock and Kel-Tek and I had to replace them...

I would have much rather been buying myself a gun, but I had to repay my debts first...

    Fuckin sucks!

Whoever asked this question, also check out the LC9 - it's almost as small as an LCP, but you can actually grip it with full adult-sized hands.
