in case anyone has the stock 265/70/r16s with trd off road wheels and wants to change to 265/70/r17 with aftermarket 17x8 wheels expect a 1.5mpg loss.

what tires and what load ranges and PSI?

Rims can also vary in weight........Ive had some 17" rims that weighed less than 15" alloy rims

    many variables

Well by going from a 265/70/16 to a 265/70/17 you changed your tire diameter by 1 inch or about 3% this changed your spedo and odo by about 3% so make sure you take that into account when you are calculating your MPG.

Both those guys are right.. You changed your tire size and wheel size not just wheel size, also like he mentioned the weight could be a lot different

More details please, this is not an all encompassing change, what are your new tires, what are your wheels, what was your old setup, etc.

It's the outside diameter change in tire size as was mentioned..........rim weight could be factor I suppose but is there really a 10lb difference in each rim or 3 inch difference in width vs oem to even get close to making any difference? Doubt it but yes, do tell................

Check my post, I did not dismiss the weight difference possibility but certainly those 2 tire size OD's point to the odometer not being completely accurate.

I know, and it's certainly true but OP said he went to 17x8 vs 16x7, aftermarket vs. oem and didn't give specifics on what wheel he went with and that they were expensive because they were lighter than stock so I don't see that much weight difference given 1 inch wider rim and 1 inch bigger rim. Of course that will vary from brand to brand. Without more input all we can do is generalize about circumference, width & weight. Primarily I believe the odometer reading variance based on difference of circumference is not being accounted for. After that I would suspect specific wheel/tire weight & widths.

had the standard trd off road rugged fails with off road rims. switched to hercules all terrain 265/70/r17 with blackrock yuma 17x8s. and yes i calculated for error. noticed a consistent -1.5

I did kinda the opposite, I went from the stock 17" sport wheels to my 16x8 Moto Metals with 265/70/16. based on my research each wheel/tire combo weighed in at about 3 lbs more than the stockers. My mpg's dropped about a half mpg.

From steelies to 16" alloy (pic 1), to 17" alloy (pic 2), what's your thoughts on mpg loss? .75 mpg loss for 16", 1.5 for 17"?

Was planning on negotiating that w my deal (granted they look sweeter than base steel rims). Also, would the tires be a straight swap w the 16" rims?
