Late to the party on your hard drive issue...but for future plans get
    1. USB 2.0 drive converter...I have a Vantec one and you can hook any hard drive up to a pc via the usb port and read the contents (I also have lots of different software for finding the "oops i deleted it" stuff)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002
    2. A 3TB external drive (or the like) stripped of it's software...run a program called Cobian BackUp it's free and fantastic. I run it 2x a week to a 3TB external. I back up Itunes folders, family pictures, digital home movies and critical folders...it runs automatically so it's brainless...I told my wife if the house is ever on fire just yank that drive and run...oh, get the kid too...
    www.cobiansoft.com

I have several Western Digital 1200JB drives with notoriously bad controller boards that I will be soldering soon to get the old pre-back up stuff off them..

I have a 6+ TB home media network with a HTPC in the livingroom connected to the HDTV...running XBMC...amazing setup for zero commercials and 1000's of shows on demand...that all "fell off a truck"

Kinda keeping on the subject. My son Justin has some money for a laptop, he does play some online games but nothing that is too hard to run. I like my Lenovo but what do you guys think is a OK laptop for him around $450? Any things to keep in mind?

Agreed. HP hardware keeps me employed. Mac's keep me working. I have minimal experience with other hardware. My best advice would be to get the extended warranty with accidental damage protection if it is a pc laptop. Shit happens. Be as prepared as you can be.

Got some decent pictures of Mt. Katahdin on my way home from camp yesterday. Thought they'd be worth sharing:

Not sure about for gaming, but mine is an Acer Aspire. $300-$350 4 yrs ago. I got it from my part time job and it does everything I need, only ever had to replace the power cord. This thing gets a lot of use and works for me.

I got a gateway laptop for like $400 and it can actually run my entire recording rig for pro quality music. It's a 15" too. I'll get you a model number if you're interested.

I'm getting a Mac next. This laptop was a purchase out of desperation. My computer died and I picked this one up in newington NH on my way to my cottage

Macs are far superior when it comes to stability, lifetime, and the ability to record tons of tracks at once. Sometimes the gateway struggles to record just 8 tracks of drums simultaneously... It sucks "oh it glitched, can you redo that take?" It pisses off the artists to no end, and myself included.

Yup stole them from him. But was about 4 feet away from him. Took the one of him on the loader. If you want the car it's a Fiesta
