Have thought about it. But in truth they just aren't that handy to take on and off.. Plus my ladder is too long.

Combined weight even with a small bed rack will be close to 200lbs or more

yea, i guess i'm better off with a good tent and a better air mattress. I just really like the idea of keeping the bed made and ready to go.

Yea and it stays much cleaner and is easy to vacuum after a trip or two.

But I used ground tents for my whole life. A nice big air mattress works wonders. One of a musts for me as it's really rocky in e hills here.

They have RTT that you can leave the bed made. Just role up the top and you're set.

some badass setups here, but i couldnt justify spending that much $, maybe a few hundred, maybe, but not more then that.
ill just sleep in my truck, or my little crappy tent that has holes in it and allows me to wake up with extreme back pain and be soaked from the morning dew.

maybe i should just get a cheap single air mattress

I had my tent mounted over the bed on Thule cross rails that could be disconnected and the tent taken off when I do not need the tent or I have the tent on my trailer.

    Mounted on bars

Thule Tracker 2 foot pads I used for disconnect

As you can see I also had plenty of room under the tent and actually had a friend sleep in the bed while I was in the tent. Worked out very well so far

Lol. Works fine for me. Truck is obviously more stable. If the situation you descibe is gonna happen with the trailer, I leave the trailer hooked to the truck. Even with the tongue jack and rear stablizer jacks on the trailer you don't want it possibly tipping over. I doubt that would actually happen but I don't want to find out and have to crawl my naked ass out of the wreckage. Besides that would be the last time I'd get any while camping. Make it solid or don't do it at all.

Very soon, I'll get to use my Kodiak VX Series 10 x 10 canvas tent. Going to take the whole family out. Can't wait!

The tent is bomber; tent + poles = 68 lbs! Here is a picture from the initial setup in the back yard.
