I just think if you're going to make a broad assessment that more guns = less crime and countries that have gotten rid of them (which I'm not suggesting) have had violent crime go up that I should be able to make the same broad assessment that murder is the most violent crime for which we still have more regardless of weapon used.

...ah, ...but there's always a "big" caveat, ...strategically hidden near the end of the article (beware the misleading headline...)

    quoted from your linked article:

    "Reported vs recorded
It's important to bear in mind that today's release focuses on police recorded crimes. These are provided to the Home Office by police authorities and forces, not all of whom collect data with the same precision according to a 2007 audit. This is problematic because it means that a higher number in a given area may indicate an improvement in reporting by police rather than a rise in criminality.
What's more, crimes recorded by police are unlikely to represent the total number of crimes that take place. To understand this better, it's useful to also consider the CSEW which asks people face-to-face about their experiences of, attitudes about and perceptions of a range of crimes.
Though police-recorded crimes are down 8.4%, the number of crimes reported in the survey has fallen by 7.1%. 8.9 million crimes were reported in the survey in the year ending September 2012, while the police recorded 3.8 million crimes in this period.
The gap between police-recorded and survey-reported crime has always been significant, but the distance between the two has widened. In 2004/05, there was an effective recording rate of 52.8%, while in the latest statistical release, this figure has dropped to 42.4%."

...it would tend to debunk the converse claim, ...(the anti's claim that more guns = more crime)... clearly that isn't the case...

Margin of error. Talk with Dick Morris, or for real answers, Nate Silver. Seriously, his book on stats is fascinating and deals with this very phenomena

Exactly correct , all claims of these types are subject to interpretaion , including " more guns = less crime "

Move past the " anti's " it's as tinfoil as your use of " alarmists "

I don't disagree, I think in the modern society where Wolf Blitzer or [insert media hack] pulls up some hot off the press stat and than uses that as a solid base for an argument like its fact, we have decided to throw meaningful discourse and facts to the wind. It's why there are shows like Crossfire and whatever other crap they put out there.

Here's a relationship for ya. There seems to be an inverse proportion between the ease of access of limitless information and the number of people making rational, informed arguments

i only used that broad statement to point out that the opposite wasn't true, using the same isolated variables (..i.e. "guns", ...and "crime") that are suggested in the opposing argument...

So to clarify grossly exaggerated labels are allowed for your argument but not mine? My apologies.

You use tinfoil everytime you post , lol

Just as you did calling anyone that has any belief at all in climate change an " alarmist " , you label anyone wishing any form of discussion on gun control or permitting an " anti "

All that does it polarize the positions and basically eliminates any civil discussion

Kinda like a 2 party political system

...i don't recall directing any label at another tacomaworld member... perhaps my greivance would be for being on the receiving end of the labels "whimp", or "pro-murder"...

like i said before, ...mature..

    ...wait, ..who's polarizing who here?...

i routinely use generalities in expressing different "sides" to the topic at hand, ...i don't single out other tacomaworld members w/ these "labels", ...in fact the contrary is true, ...as evident in this thread alone...

you may not agree w/ me, but to react by proclaiming "tinfoil" is about as mature as the guy who called me "pro-murder"...

I have no idea what you're trying to say with the link but I thought this was interesting. A whole article about a town that requires by law it's citizens to own a firearm:

"Graydon estimates about 50 percent of Kennesaw owns guns today, and that many residents don’t know the law exists."

Also really glad I don't live anywhere near the south, embarrassing.

"In an inventory that includes shirts honoring the Ku Klux Klan and racist bumper stickers, he says his best seller is a T- Shirt displaying two crossed pistols and the motto, “It’s the law in Kennesaw.”
