    This is my first post on TW so hello everyone glad to be here. I own a 88 Wrangler and I just purchased my very first Toyota 2013 TRD OR Tacoma I love them both that's for sure but I am sure come summer time there will be nothing like hauling a$$ down the beach in my YJ with no top, doors or anything else for that matter.

    I do have to say that so far (500 miles) I am very impressed with my taco and can't wait to take is down the beach.

    a little thread revival and some updated info on the new 2013 jeeps.

    i just sold my regular cab and bought a 2013 moab 2door wrangler it drives freaking wonderful down the road i also drove a rubicon and thought that drove great as well in both manual and automatic guise.

    the new 3.6 pentastar is a sweet little mill its got some guts its a world apart from the older jeeps. the new 5 and 6 speed trans also feels refined and smart to my perception. so long as the reliability is there like it was in my toyota i would never hesitate to own one of these again.

    absolutely loving mine so far heres a pick of jack my new jeep.

    I owned a 1988 Wrangler YJ Sahara between 1997 and 2001. I bought it with 85k miles on it when i was 17. By 110k, i was putting in a rebuilt engine, clutch, radiator, etc. etc. I was college and couldn't afford the repairs, so i sold it my senior year. Despite the costs, I loved that thing. 3 different tops (hard, soft, bikini), full doors, half doors, BFG A/T's. It was my beach truck, and i wheeled it and it was awesome. 11 years, 2 volkswagens and a pathfinder later, i picked up my 2005 Tacoma w/ 80k miles. So far i love this truck. Apples to oranges though, there is nothing like rolling around with no doors, barefoot, and just the bikini top up in the summer. Different time of my life though...different needs. I know none of this information is useful, but just took me back to a good time in life.

    Can't go wrong with either, just a personal preference. Also i drove that jeep back and forth to school and skiing, it was great. The Taco is just full-size fun with a back seat for friends.

    lol...truth is, these guys were in a tough spot in some vey unforgiving snow. They seemed like good folks who just went a few feet too far. They were really lucky we came along when we did though. They had just made a note for the windshield and were preparing for the long cold walk off the mountain.

    Really not a Taco vs Jeep issue. This was, first of all, a driver experiance and secondly a "just what happens when your playing in deep snow" issue.

    If you claim to not have been stuck it is no proof you have some magical rig...it either means you have honesty issues or just never push the limits of yourself or your rig. I would venture that I have been stuck more times than the vast majority of people out there. That is not a negative reflection on my rig or my driving but is just the opposite. I have been stuck in places most could not have even gotten to in the first place.
    On this day, we were headed to play in the deapest snow we could find so all in my group would end up stuck so many times we lost count. In other words...we had a great time.

    the only thing i miss about my 99 grand cherokee ( wj ) is the full time 4wd. i dont miss the repair times ive spent on the damn thing at all. i still have a 98 grand ( zj ) ( wifes ) its been good but itll go when it starts nickle and dimein me to death

    I just traded my 09 Liberty for my 2012 Tacoma. The jeep worked and drove very well, but I never had a vehicle depreciate so quickly. We got a Rav4 last year so we didn't need 2 small suv's. However now that I've driven the Tacoma for a while, there is no comparison!

    Got to chime in:
    Going from 2000 TJ on long arm/Atlas II and 35s to a stock 2010 Taco double cab.

    I've owned six Jeeps, including two Comanches, most wheeled hard. I'm switching to the Taco for seating mostly, but power everything and updated safety are more important now. Plus Jeep doesn't make a Comanche, and without hacking up an XJ you don't get quad cab anyway...

    Tacoma was an instant hit with me and the wife, and even though mine isn't even plated yet I'm totally addicted.

    I'm on the fence, if I were to get another wheeler/basher it would probably be an XJ, but for DD, groceries and trails that don't have body crushing obstacles, I think I'm really going to like the taco.

    The VIN of the car is 3TMJU62N17_. Consumer owns a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that when refueling the vehicle, fuel would spill from the fuel tank abnormally. The contact took the vehicle to his personal mechanic and was told that the filler and overflow lines would need to be replaced. The contact was concerned that the failure could cause a fire. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 44,400. It was Feb. 19, 2011 when this fuel hoses lines/piping and fittings issue happened.

The vehicle was completely destroyed. The contact was unsure if there was property damage. A fire report was filed. The current and failure mileages were 3,000. The consumer provided an incident report. Updated 06/08/07. This fuel hoses lines/piping and fittings issue occurred March 24, 2007.

While stopping at a red-light he noticed there were flames coming from between the cab and bed of the pickup truck. The fire was extinguished, and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership had the vehicle for nine weeks. The vehicle has been repaired, and is ready to be picked up. The cause of the fire was from the fuel line and the seal of the fuel tank. This issue happened on 09/03/2005.

There is a high pressure injection hose that goes from the fuel filter to a fitting on the fire wall and back to the gas tank. The plastic clamp that holds this hose up,wore a hole in the hose. The part number for the hose assembly that broke is 2390675040. This fuel hoses lines/piping and fittings problem happened on Jun. 3, 2004.

Consumer states that he has written Toyota and they have never answered he wants to get money for personal items destroyed in vehicle fire. ** the consumer stated he continues to receive recall notices about the vehicle that was destroyed in a fire. The failure date was 12/01/03.

    The car involved was a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. Our daughter was driving our Toyota pick-up when she smelled a gas oder. She immediatly pulled over and called her mother. Her mother insisted that she come home immediatly. Fortunately she was not far from home. Upon her arrival at home dad went outside to see what was the problem. Our neighbor came over and assisted in helping pin point the problem. There was not just a drip but a huge puddle of gas underneath the truck. We discovered a ruptured fuel hose coming from the gas tank. It appears that the plastic tab holding the hose in place chaffed a hole in it. I immediatly came inside and did some research on the internet and also called some local Toyota dealerships. What I discovered was that Toyota did have a recall on a hose on this vehicle but it was another hose in another location. At that point I ordered a Toyota replacement gas hose from our local dealership. After waiting a week for a hose to be shipped, I picked up the part and installed it myself easily. The problem has been fixed and and no other problem since. I am a true Toyota fan and presently own two. Toyotas has been in our family for the past 30 years. I typically do not complain but, due to all of the publicity of Toyota's safety problems I feel it necessary to report this. Yes, it was an inconvenience, but my real concern is that this doesn't happen to anyone else. Gas was squirting within an inch of a hot exhaust system and could have easily resulted in a fire or an explosion. Thank you for hearing me out. This fuel hoses lines/piping and fittings problem happened on Apr. 13, 2009.

    From NBC NEWS:

    Japan’s two largest automakers appear to be locked in a race to achieve thedubious distinction of having recalled more vehicles than any other automakerduring 2012 for an array of safety-related problems that range from firehazards to seat belt issues.

    The latest problem involves 140,000 Toyota Tacoma pickupswhich, the maker says, could experience corrosion severe enough that theirspace tires could fall off while driving. Toyota has recalled several othermodels, including its Sienna minivan, for similar problems in the past.

    The announcement comes barely a month after Toyota revealedit would have to recall 7.5 million vehicles worldwide due to faulty powerwindow switches that could catch fire, including 2.5 million vehicles sold inthe U.S. It was the largest single recall in the maker’s history. That followedby days Honda’s announcement of three separate safety callbacks impacting 1.7million vehicles.

    Just traded my Wrangler Tj in for a Trd sport DC.
    I will definately be getting another wrangler for a summer toy/trail rig when i can afford one. Probably a YJ or CJ though.

    Had to get the tacoma for interior room/family/space needs.
    The TJ was just too small.

    Ill know how i feel about it better this summer when i go driving on the beach.

    Actually I think the Taco is a great truck. It is made for a bit different customer than the Jeep Wrangler though. However, I find many of the comparisons a bit silly. Comparing a Jeep Wrangler with a Taco is a bit like comparing a Taco to a BMW M6 Coup. At least make it a FJC vs Wrangler competition. At least that makes some sense. And of course THAT is the vehicle Toyota says is their competitor in that particular vehicle segment.



    The simple fact is that, should you be looking for a rig which is truly OHV trail ready off the dealer show room, the Taco is not a good choice. (but the FJC might be) And if you want a rig which is a truck, has a refined interior and has great highway manners…the Jeep Wrangler is not going to make you happy.



    Pick a rig people…but if it comes down to TACO vs Wrangler, you are one confused buyer as these have very little in common without considerable modification.

    I considered a JK Unlimited. Passed after the test drive. Loud and rough compared to the Toyota. Both have awesome resale. JK was more expensive IMO for what you get.

    I thought I would use the bed of the truck more often.

    I was also not sure about the 3.6 Pentastar longevity just yet. Still too new to know how they hold up with some big miles.

    For me it came down to the fact that I can tow my muscle cars with the truck. No way with the JK.

    Well I own Jeep TJ and just bought a 2013 reg cab 4x4. I love them both but I could never compare them to each other. Each has a different purpose in my household. The Jeep is a toy....simple as that. Hell it gets 10mpg and has one rough ride but I love it. The Taco is my daily driver/farm truck. I don't have to plan out how I'm gonna carry a couple of bales of hay and 10 sacks of corn. Just throw it in the bed and away we go. I love the little truck though.

    Guess I always looked at this thread as comparing the off road capabilities of a Taco and a Jeep - never really thought about comparing the interior and features. Here's my 2¢:

    JK
    - Factory locking tailgate
    - Heated leather seats (factory option)
    - "Sunroof" ;-)
    - Automatic headlights
    - Integrated key/key fob
    - Front and rear e-lockers (Rubicon)
    - Front swaybar e-disconnect (Rubicon)
    - Small towing capacity
    - No factory truck bed (aftermarket)

    Taco
    - No factory tailgate lock (aftermarket)
    - No factory leather or heat (in the US) (aftermarket)
    - No sunroof (aftermarket)
    - No automatic headlights
    - Separate key/key fob
    - Rear e-locker only (TRD OR)
    - No sway bar e-disco
    - Larger towing capacity
    - Truck bed

    I could probably keep going, but if you were really trying to outfit a Taco to match some of the factory options of a JK, the price would be closer than you think. And on the other hand, if you wanted to add a truck bed to a JK, the Mopar JK-8 kit definitely isn't cheap and you're stuck with only two doors.

    Also, as far as ride quality, my stock JK had a much better ride than my stock TRD OR. The Taco would rattle your teeth over bumps and washboard - the JK just takes it. And now that both of my rigs are lifted, the 3" Teraflex lift I have on the JK makes it ride and handle like a dream. While the 2.5" OME lift on the Taco helped to make the ride better, the JK still wins hands down.

    All that being said, I love both of my rigs for what they are. And when the zombie apocalypse comes, I'll leave the Taco for the neighbors. :D
