Melting side rear view mirrors?

OP, any more info on this?

 

Nobody put a torch or purposely tried to melt the mirrors. I would be more inclined to go with the reflection off glass as the cause. I do not though need to have you "BS Flag" it. If this is the way the forum answers problems than count me out.

 

I've never noticed it on other tacoma's, I'd like to know what could have heated the outside of the mirror so much as to distort the plastic. Are these stock mirrors?

 

Don't get discouraged from this great site because of that. Thing is, I've been in here for a couple years, and never seen your issue, as I would think everyone else here. Unfortunately we are sometimes subjected to trolls, who come on here with Bullshit stories, so a lot of people are weary of new problems like this. I don't suspect you as a troll, so I'm very curious as to what may have caused this, because I don't want it to happen to my truck.

 

Yes, that is the stock mirror on the passenger side. The drivers side was stock and it did the same thing, although that one was recently replaced when somebody knocked it off, I ended up throwing it away. I bought the truck new for my son in 2007 and he is now driving a Civic that I had and gave me back the Tacoma. It is a nice truck and I thought I would make a few improvements on it. btw, I'm 54 and not going to "BS" the Tacoma Forum. After reading a few threads this is what I thought I would do next:
Rear Shocks, new stereo starting with new rear speakers in the access cab doors then front speakers and if needed a new head unit. Then a toolbox.

Is there any damage in the area besides the mirror? At 212 degrees on the mirror to cause this as if from a reflection there would almost certainly be some paint damage etc somewhere in the vicinity. It appears to be concentrated in just that area.

What about an exhaust from another vehicle ?

I've seen similar burns from machinery like skid steers or forklifts

 

Someone would have to be trying, to get both mirrors like that.

OP, where you park it, is there window glare? Since you think that's the cause. I'm still thinking there would be other damage than the mirrors if it was. Paint doesn't take that much heat to bubble. I would think that would go, before the plastics.

Also OP, you said your son was driving it for a while. He piss anyone off, that would do such a thing? I'm really at a loss, as to what caused it.

 

There was no other damage to the car, it happened on both mirrors, I posted a picture of it, I have seen other Toyota's, not Tacoma's, on the road with the same warper mirror here in SoCal. The reason I posted is because I don't know what happened. It would be logical to assume that the plastic that Toyota uses or used in the mirrors is the problem. btw,what's with name calling and putdowns?

I just found this, look at the picture. Unless there is some "blowtorch" crazed person that hates Toyota's it must be the plastic that Toyota is using.

We are assuming the quality of the ABS plastic Toyota uses to be top-notch, just like the quality of the steel they use in their leaf springs. Maybe there was a bad batch of plastic mirrors.....

all newer car plastics are tested at very high heat at least 200 deg F
and they simply do not degrade in the sun...this must be extreme
heat from building reflection or vandal

That, or this is a cheap aftermarket replacement mirror housing, made
of crap plastic. Just like cheap headlights, there is a big business in
sub-par easy-to-make plastic cars parts that look fine, but don't stand up.

 

This is the STOCK mirror, is everybody in denial here? Just as I have said, it happened to both my stock mirrors, I have seen it on other Toyota's, I just posted another picture of a Prius with the same thing. There is no blow torch maniac, no cheap after market products. I really don't care about the mirror, I just wanted to see if it was happening to anybody else.

First I have heard of it. Where is the truck parked the majority of the time? Just because it is stock does not mean it is quality, and just because something is aftermarket does not make it garbage.

Dear Mr. ------,

Reflected sunlight from low-e windows can, if certain atmospheric conditions are present, potentially generate sufficient heat to thermally distort vinyl siding and plastic products, such as your truck mirrors.

To avoid repeat damage, and assuming that you do not wish to replace your windows, you could park your truck in another location, place covers over your mirrors when parked, or install screens or awnings on the windows to diffuse or block the reflected sunlight.
