It was brought it up in another (now locked) thread that the official description of a police officer's duties is to enforce laws, not to protect the public.

I have a BIG problem with that. ^^ Ever read the side of a cruiser? "To Protect and to Serve".

Kinda like when posters accuse others of being a troll and looking to start controversy ?

Just because its not in the "official description" it doesn't mean they don't protect and endanger themselves for civilians. Those stories just usually don't make the news. The corrupt cops make for the sexy news grabbing headline.

We are sworn to protect and uphold the constitution of the US, the laws of the state and to protect the citizens of our jurisdiction against enemies.

Protect and serve is done by enforcing laws but enforcing laws is not the base line job description.

Absolutely chilling statement. If he had taken the correct steps to lawfully go after the people he felt had wronged him, it would be supported by most. The dude was a cold blooded killer.

My point is, that although it's been stated that "it isn't the official duty of the police to protect people"... by enforcing laws, they do... Fewer DUI's, fewer gang members, correlates to a safer populous.

Also, even though it is stated in those terms, if a cop saw someone try to carjack you at gun point, they're not just going to sit in their patrol car and wait until afterwords and come get your statement.

Legally they can. Law enforcement is under no legal obligation to protect or to serve.

Thats the point earlier posters were making.

I know ^^ that never happens, and that is why I am so grateful and have such high respect for LEO's. But the legality of it all really bothers me.

Yea but its much easier to talk about what they theoretically don't have to do instead of what they actually do.

Except when police seek and are granted special protections and new infringments on constitutional rights in order to "protect and serve" the community then it rings hollows.

I'll focus on the stories of officers putting themselves in the line of fire, rescuing someone from a burning residence, or performing CPR on someone and saving their life. If others prefer to daydream about the evil constitution breaking officers ignoring calls for help from people that's their prerogative.
