Well I have not had a problem yet.

But think about it. You have a 5' bed and are buying 8' 2x4's. The bulk of your weight will be in the bed with only 3' extending beyond the bed. About what... 14"s on the tail gate? Should not be an issue. You could also get one 2x4 cut the width of the bed and put at the back. This will keep all weight off the tail gate.

Best suggestion - Rent the HD or Lowe's truck for $25 an hour, have them load the 2x4's with a fork lift, bust it home and unload, and return the truck within an hour. Cheaper then a trailer and that thing from HF.
