    Toyota USA won't respond.

And the article already said that Ford and Chevy have tossed the half ton truck diesel option around...so.....that's their response.

Not a bad truck honestly. VW is known for their diesel fuel efficiency.

    I concur...Toyota won't do anything.
I still would rather drive a Tacoma.

Toyota has enough problems with one small truck in America let alone 2.
even though the Hilux is probably engineered /built better...

Toyota is going to eventually HAVE to do something to meet the new CAFE standards... or no more Tacomas in America.

when do the new standards go into effect?

The tacoma is and always will be the best selling small truck, because of reputation. They don't need to add a bunch of new fangled junk that the big 3 add just to make sure the trucks sell.

Yeah but their electronics are junk, not to mention there was a run of fuel pumps that suffered rapid unauthorized disassembly.

Haven't you heard. The state truck of Hawaii is the Tacoma. Won't have a problem selling here.

I know of two people down here that own VW Auto Group vehicles that had their fuel pumps literally "explode" inside their fuel tanks. When I say explode I mean rapid mechanical separation resulting in high velocity chunks. One rig was a 2011 Toureg with TDI and the other an 2011 Audi A3. VW did not want to warrant either of them and it took significant fight on the customers part to get them fixed. VW was claiming that the diesel was contaminated and wouldn't warranty the failed pump.

The cost to repair the A3 was well north of $9k.

Have you looked at actual auto-industry sales figures in the US over the past quarter century?

Body on frame, leaf sprung live rear axle pickups are hardly on the cutting edge of the "newfangled junk" field. That trophy belongs to luxury marques like Lexus, Caddy and the like.

Diesels may make it into full size pickups because they sell enough that the exorbitant costs of implementing a diesel powerplant in the US could actually be recouped due to sales volume. That it and that's all. You CERTAINLY won't see them in midsize pickups here any time soon.

VW makes themselves attractive to buyers in a lot of ways, but mechanical reliability has never been one of those ways.

You couldn't pay me to own a VW.

True story! My buddy owns a 2007 Audi S4 and while the car's nice It's got some issues including burning a quart of oil quite frequently...
