Re use of stock fog lights

I have a new set of lights on the way for my truck. They are blacked out, they also come with smoke fog lights.

I'm thinking about using my stock fog lights as extra lighting from behind my grill. Can I splice into the fog light circuit and run all 4 without overloading the circuit or should I run a separate circuit?

 

I would run a separate circuit for them. I doubt Toyota planned on the stock one running twice the load.

 

Just saying from experience: You will want to be sure those headlights are sealed really well before you install them. Take your time and some silicone and go around the edges really well to seal them up or they will fog, and that is a PITA to correct after the fact.

 

You probably want to run at least a separate switch for them, which probably means it's easier to set up a separate circuit all together.

 

Thanks for the tip on sealing the lights, I would have never known... I think I will run a separate circuit and switch. Only thing left to figure out is how to mount them.

I also wonder If I can fit or modify the light housings to fit a brighter bulb?

Correct. Blazers from TRS. This was harder to do than the headlight retro, but I think they came out great, and absolutly worth it. Some people just cut out a hole in the back and stick the end through. I ended up putting the whole projector inside the housing. Then some plexi glass shrouds and presto:

 

I got my headlight/fog kit today, lights look great can't wait to get them in. I didn't realize the kit came with a complete wiring harness including switch and relay! That will make wiring up my original fog lights behind my grill that much easier.

It has a fuse built into the harness so I'm assuming I can get the 12v at an open location near the battery?

 

Would it be ok to stick whatever type bulb that will fit in the oem fog housings? Preferably something much brighter. Would heat be an issue?

 

I don't mean to thread jack but how are your retros holding up? I finally got mine sealed and did the fog light anytime mod so they've been running almost constantly

 

H10s fit the housing & plug and are 55W in stead of 42W.

 

My new fog housings use a 9005 bulb, I found some 100w bulbs, would that be too much for these housings?

 

Definitely too much for the stock wiring, not sure about the housing itself. That's a lot of juice for a small, plastic housing.

 

Yeah that's what I was thinking. What about 65w. I found some nokya 9005 65w in 3800k

 

My wiring could handle two 100W bulbs but I doubt the housings could.

How long do you run them for at a time?
I just got the 55Ws when a local TWer gave me his front bumper skin with fogs & rear bumper with receiver hitch. The longest mine have been on is 45 min, don't know how long he ran them for at a time.

55w is workable, but double that?
