woah...Carlsbad replica track? How cool! I recognize that section. I used to race on the real one. The big drop off would be just to the right, out of your shot.

I'm a lucky bastard, in that my wife let me take her, our 2.5 year old, and our 4-month old camping a few weeks ago. Yay!

Thanks. Agua Caliente campground, operated by the county of San Diego. The heated pools, and warm weather made this location ideal for family camping for the very first time.

Thank you for all the awesome pics and descriptions, It looks like i need to finish outfitting my Tacoma and try some camping. I have am 06 access cab with a fiberglass camper top, Are there going to be any meetups this spring ? I am from S. E. North Carolina and am also planning to have my amateur radio installation complete by that time. I really appreciate all the ideas all of you have given me for future projects for my truck.

    Thanks,

    Eric

    Tent campers.

Have any of you devised a system whereby you attach one end of a tarp of some kind to your truck or shell and place it so that it goes over your tent? I am mostly thinking about how to protect my family's tent from win and rain.

Then you'll need to protect the tarp from win(d) and rain...

Let me rephrase that. What I really want to do is set up a barrier so that if/when the wind starts cranking the tarp will taking the beating instead of listening to and feeling our tent get sandblasted. Know what I mean?

If you're tent is pitched in the trees, then you can easily put a tarp cover over the top. Just grab a handy small rock and place it in the center of the tarp. Grab the tarp around the rock from the opposite side then tie off one end of a rope pinching the rock inside. Toss the other end over a branch above then hoist it to whatever height you want and tie it off. Tie off corners of the tarp with more pieces of line to whatever trees are around. With a large enough tarp you can cover your whole campsite, but just make sure it's not above the fire pit.

I assume we're talking about a tent that's shorter than the truck cap? You didn't say whether or not your cap has cargo bars on top. If so, and you're camped out in the open, then it should be pretty easy to tie off one side of the tarp to your rack, then find some rocks or something to tie off the other side of the tarp. If you don't have bars on top, then I'd be hesitant to run a tarp over it. The wind will whip the tarp against the paint and cock it all up.

Not sure if I answered your question, but just tossing out a couple of ideas.

    Thanks guys. :)

I got to go camping again this weekend, but did a backpack up the side of a mountain in the desert instead of truck camping. Mini trip report here:

That is my buddy on the trail there. He likes his pack very much, dunno what model it is, has a hip belt that is heated in an oven and then you wear it and it forms to your body. I have a Greggory Baltero 70L pack which I love and wrote about in this post here.

I just got a cap for m BCLB on saturday, and picked up a nice family sized tent off CL last weekend. Just gotta pick up some roof rack mounts and I'm looking for a kayak. Can't wait for nice weather to take the family on their first taco campout.

Last summer shake down for camp setup, Lake San Antonio Ca, then rains came and haven't been out since. Double cab short bed, softopper, DAC truck tent over softopper and dropped tailgate (fits my 6'2" frame just fine with tailgate dropped), ripstop nylon over futon foam pad for bedding. Shade structure is Kelty poles (gold) in custom removable brackets I had welded to my rear bumper, side sliders, and front bumper, with custom aluminum poles (silver) to suspend ripstop tarp. I have two identical pole/tarp setups, so one shades rear sleeping half of truck, while other can go off front, side, or rear, depending on wind and sun direction. Only got this one trip in last year, but heading to Joshua Tree in a few weeks for easter break, then some trips in High Sierras if someone wants to kick down with some secret roads!!!!!
