    It was either very lightly barked with moss on top, or just moss and the bark was long gone. Sounded hollow if you banged them together, which sometimes they actually were hollow.

    Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
    Slippery Elm is my best guess. Bark usually falls off while tree is standing dead, but most of the branches have usually fallen off as well before they hit the ground. Wood is reddish brown once seasoned and is hard as hell.
