Hi & Lo Beams on at same time

Has anyone done a mod where you can run the HI & LO beams at the same time? I know on my previous Ford truck they sold a "brite box" that did this. You could run HI & LO beams and if you did your fog light mod you're in good company.

 

You need to check with your local state laws. In some states, it'll illegal to run both.

It doesn't matter if it's legal or not if you only use it off road.

 

I doubt that its illegal to run your low beams with your hi beams... Might be illegal to have your hi beams always on. I think what he is wanting to do is to be able to have his low beams remain on when he switches to hi beam, correct me if I'm wrong. Ron

 

How and the hell could they figure it out unless you ran them on 24/7 blinding the shit outta people all night? If its just treated like high beams I can't imagine any legal issues. Only thing I could think of is the heat generated by both lights being on could be detrimental, not to mention the extra power draw. I'd do it though. Man, with the high/lows both on and the fog lights all at once, there is nothing you'll miss on the road! I love it.

 

may be a dumb response, but correct me if i'm wrong, is it even possible to have the lows and highs on at the same time since there's only one bulb?

I know alot of older vehicles even some of the current vehicles have 4 bulbs 2 seperate sets for high and low

 

There is only one bulb per lens, but in each bulb there are two filaments.

I am sure there is a way to wire both of them to come on, but for safety reasons of not putting too much amperage load on wiring that is mean to see the draw of only one of the filaments at a time I would not recommend it.

 

If I'm not mistake, you can hold the 'low/high' handle as if you were flashing someone when you pull back and both will be on. I remember this because every once in awhile I simply hold it back to brighten up the road if I'm looking for deer. Otherwise, tussery has is right, one bulb, two filaments.... essentially two bulbs in one package, thus making heat buildup a large factor in this mod.

 

Remember that using both filaments at the same time will result in more current draw through the existing wires. If you keep it on like that for extended periods of time, you make want to think about upgrading the wire to something more stout.

 

Don't think its illegal, i would love to do this as well. I have found that when i go offroading at night in my Z71 Tahoe, if i hold the lever it brings on both sets of lights, i mean i have to hold it, but it makes it really bright in a clearing to figure out which way to go. If i could get a way to get the to stay that way for nighttime offroading i would do it too, its incredibly brighter, especially when running the fogs.

Plus i am pretty sure this is what he is talking about, i don't think he wants to run down the freeway with both sets of lights on, I mean that wouldn't be to smart. I am pretty sure he is just looking for something to use on the trails at night.

 

Not to mention thats a lot of heat. I would bet the bulbs would burn out a lot faster.

Unless you are talking about a different car, with 2 different bulbs for hi and low.

It's a VERY good idea to get familiar with your state laws. Not saying you can't go againest them..... The only way you can *work around* your state laws is to know and understand them.

I have a set of fog lights that are wired constant. Here in PA - that is illegal.
Legally, they can only be used with low beams. For vehicle inspections every year, I have to remove power to my fogs to pass inspection. That's my way of getting around it (and yeah, I could still get caught and get a ticket).

 

A.D hey man here is a kit i had in my Chevy at one time for all four lights to stay on! its called the hi-4 kit but they don't make one for the tacos.

As I could definitely use the added brightness at night, I would like to hear about someone doing this successfully.

I guess the issues of heat, over amping the wire and blowing bulbs makes this a long shot but I would be great!

And yeah, I don't think it's illegal and don't think a cop would EVER know I had it because, if he is coming toward me, the highs are going off (if I remember ).



Can you wire your aftermarket off-road lights to come on with your high beams? I would do this. I don't off road and don't need it for that purpose but I would use them at night (only with the high beams for legal reasons). My poor eyesight would appreciate it on back country roads.
