Automatic transmistion help please

I have a 97 tacoma 2.4 liter and the problem is that when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd under load, the shift takes a long time. Kinda like when you are first learing to drive a stick and you slip the clutch too long while giving it gas. It drives great, downshifts to 3rd gear via accelerator pedal or the o/d button. The problem seems to get worse as the car warms up. No problems in any other gear just going into third. Shifting into 3rd has never been as precise as the other gears since I bought it with 60K now 135K. I drain the tranny fluid every 15K and use mobil 1 synthetic auto tranny fluid. And the fluid is fine and no smells and correct amount.

Second problem is really a rough idle when it warms up. Fine when cold but then it gets bad where the dash rattles. I have checked for motor mounts they seem fine. Have changed fuel filter, air filter, seafoam checked the pcv valve the vacume hoses, sparkplugs, airfilter you name it. The car gets good milage about 25mpg. I just wished it idled better. I have a obdII scanner nad no codes. Thanks for all of your help.

If I had to pose a guess, I think it sounds like a vacuum issue, I would check the hoses.

 

My 95 has a rough idol as well. I put a thread the other day about this. and i got feed back. I have changed everything you did and then some and i cant get it to quit. I dont see any vaccuum lines off on my truck. on Monday im gonna pull the throttle body off and clean it see if that does the trick. if that doesent help im going to take it to the shop cause i cant stand it anymore. good luck with yours.

 

IMO you guys need to get the factory service manual. Can't do much on a modern car/truck w/o it.

They show up on ebay now and then for $5 in CD form or you can wade through the thousand+ links in the sticky above.

 

UPDATE: Just got some throttle body cleaner from local parts store and followed the directions improved the idol 100%. Hope that helps.

I appreciate everybody's help. I am going to take the throttle body off and clean it along with the throtle position censor and clean that. My biggest concerns is how it slips going into 3rd gear. I also have the Hanes repair manual for the truck along with a scanner. Looking forward to some more replies. Thanks.

 

I know in the first post you said you have changed the tranny fluid are u also replacing the tranny filter just a thought

 

Agreed............a clogged filter will provoke tranny symptoms like you describe. The rough idle is most likely a seperate problem.

 

I guess I will drop the pan and change the filter/screen. Never have done that. It was doing it at 60k miles as well. Could the screen get that bad that quickly? I always just drain the fluid from the tranny pan and add new. I have done a full flush but never removing the pan. I hope that helps and its nothing serious.
