i figured this would be the place to ask my noob questions but i want to build an AR since buying a complete is out of my price range and the likely hood that id be able to build it by ban is improbable. So my question is what parts do i need to pick up before the ban? stripped lower and upper? 30rd mags? thanks in advance guys!

Aside from all this magazine crap going on the only part that's serialized and may require a background/transfer fee is the lower. Get a lower receiver and then you can build as you get funds or the parts become available. As far as the government is concerned the lower receiver is THE firearm. So, if I were a fella looking to start a build on a limited budget I would get a lower receiver and a handful of Pmags. You really can't go wrong there. The parts that are really hard to get to complete that would be a BCG and then potentially upper parts but the rest come in and out of stock from time to time.

Thanks ostrichsak, gonna have to look more seriously into getting a lower and some p-mags. another question to add on to my previous ones are quality lowers to buy any thoughts since there are so many out there now. Im not really a AR guy so im not to sure about which companies i should be looking at!

Stay away from the polymer (aka plastic) ones. Other than that they're all pretty much the same. I'm an AR snob and pay more for nicer roll marks (aka the lines of the manufacturer on the side) but to be honest most anything on the market will do just fine and several companies have them made by the same manufacturer and then just put their logo or roll mark on them. These days you pretty much just take what you can get. The parts that go into the lower receiver are far more important to functionality and actual use. The brand name is just to impress the n00bs. :D

Sorry I was on mobile. Didn't see he was in Colorado. Carry on...

In that case I would get a lower, upper, lpk, collapsible stock, grip, and a barrel with a flash hider on it. The rest you should still be able to buy afterwards

Makes sense. You live in a pretty pro2A state so these things probably don't even register on your radar. I would warn though that Colorado was once much like Texas and it didn't take long at all for shit like this to start happening. It's important for EVERYONE to get involved with politics on your local level to prevent stuff like this happening in your state. There wasn't much warning in CO either until one day there was the proposed bills.

As of the current session the ONLY stuff that will change in the state of Colorado will be how private party firearms sales happen, the restriction of mags that have 15rds or less, the requirement for the gun buyer to absorb the cost of the background check (de facto gun tax anyone?) and the inability to carry any of the above on a school or college campus. So, with all that in mind, the only thing that Colorado residents should buy right now w/o wait would be lowers, handguns and magazine over 15rds. The latter will probably be the most important as acquiring them after July 1st will be illegal. The former will be possible with more cost associated, more wait & more PITA than current. Which is already a pain in the ass. The other parts you mentioned are hard to find right now (like all gun parts) but they will not be regulated by the state or federal government anytime soon. If for some reason the Dems in DC start to get more support for another AWB then all bets are off but as of now we should all be safe on that front.

Exactly. See what I said above about how the four bills that just passed the Colorado House will negatively impact the residents of this state.

Gosh, that's horrible. I can't even begin to imagine how devastating it would be to lose the use of that much of my body. Need to buy a neck brace before I do anything stupid on my dirtbike... That's awesome people are making it possible to get him out shooting though!

This is awesome! I would comment but I'm not a member on there. If he wants to set up a BBQ you guys should look into Island view shooting range. Its indoor and fairly new and the only shooting range in ventura. Oak tree gun club is over by six flags so not crazy far, and it is big and outdoors. They would have plenty of room for a BBQ. They even have a bar haha
