Gotta sell the truck, where and what price?

I have to sell her, where do you guys think would be a good place to start? Ebay, carmax? sell it to a dealer? Auto trader? Where have you had good luck? Its a 2009 sr5 with 48500 miles, very well maintained and in excellent shape, what price do you think is reasonable to start with? KBB values seem very high, should I look somewhere other than KBB?

 

These trucks have ridiculous resale value. Try Craigslist first. I just sold my car and got full ask price. I put it on all Craigslists within two hours drive. Sols in 2 weeks. You may also be able to find a rare if you know what you want or need.

Check Edmund's for the value also.

 

Good place to start would be CarMax, but that's only a start. They will lowball the hell out of you, next would be dealers, see if they will beat the carmax price.

 

I sold my Tundra on Craigslist in about ten days. Got $500 more than I had hoped to get.

 

Tacomaworld, autotrader, Craigslist (watch out for scams). All of those are free to advertise on. If you sell to a dealer you will get less and they will low ball you. If you trade in you will get more but still less than its worth but its the easiest way.

Mine sold on Tuesday for slightly better than KBB value. It was listed on Cars.com and Craigslist. I listed it in Birmingham, as well as a few cities close by, and Atlanta. I don't know how active the CL is in Baltimore, but you should list it in the DC CL as well.

I took it to Carmax just to see what they'd offer. I ended up getting $4,000 more than their offer. I'd still take the truck there, but don't expect to get what you could get from a private sale.

The buyer, a new member here, saw it on craigslist.

I listed it the second week of January, so it took a while to sell. I had the patience and a low interest loan on the new car (now paid off w/ the truck proceeds), so I didn't mind waiting.

 

Another bit of advice on CL.... DON'T DELETE the email they send you after you create the ad. It has a link you need to modify your ad. I can't find one of the ones they sent me, so I can't delete my Tuscaloosa ad and I'm still getting emails. It'll go away after 30 days, but still....

 

And remember that on CL to put it in with a little negotiation room as they always want to dicker. List everything the vehicle has including flaws. Take a couple of pictures at a neutral location and do not list your address. It is easier to meet interested folks nearby and give you a chance to screen flakes before bringing them to your home.

 

Don't put your license plate on there either, unless you want visitors over

 

I sold my F150 on Craigslist in a week. I went on the Auto Trader website, typed in my specs to find similar models, and listed it on the higher end of what everyone else was selling theirs for.

When a guy met up with me, he kept trash talking my truck about what was wrong with it like he was going to ask for a lower price. I finally told him if he isn't interested, I had 5 other emails I need to follow up on and to let me know that day or the next. He bought it that day.

 

One thing to think about if you are buying something new is taxes. In Kansas when you trade in a car you only pay taxes on the difference, if you buy a car outright you pay taxes on the whole amount. So basically a 30,000 car would result in almost 3000 in taxes if you bought something outright. so think about the difference a couple thousand dollars retail vs trade in might be a wash at the end.

You have to pay tax if you buy something used, too. Dealerships will charge sales tax at the time of sale, but you also have to pay it when you buy from an individual: When you register your vehicle, you have to take the bill of sale with you. They make you pay tax based on where you live and based on the amount noted on the bill of sale.

I've had buyers ask me to leave the amount blank on their copy of the bill of sale. I assume they put some low amount on there to avoid as much tax as possible.

Not advocating, just noting my experience.

I think it's pretty common that you reduce sales tax by trading in a car... You only pay tax on the difference in your trade and the new (or new-to-you) vehicle. You can easily calculate your tax benefits of a trade-in. If you take your car to Carmax for an estimate, their offer will include "you could save $XXX.xx in taxes if you trade your vehicle for another Carmax vehicle."

 

4x4 or 2wd? Then look at trucks in your area.. in my area it may be worth 25 but in yours only 20 depends on the demand

 

I assumed some things about the truck, and KBB said that Excellent condition is $20,521. I'd start it at $20,500 and see what happens.

 

I assumed 2x4 in my KBB estimate... Still, you think it'd be worth $25k in your area? I should have sold my truck up there!

Wow, that is awesome return. My 2009 DC OR 4x4 only has 40k on it, if I could get 25, I would think about selling and buying a new FJ.
