Not your average tire question

After reading and research I ordered the Michelin LTX A/T 2's today. I did not have to buy them yet just ordered them. The thing is they are not available in a lesser load range. Basically at the 265/75/16 size they are only available in the "E" rating. This means they are going to be a lot heavier and I am worried about my MPG going way down. If I go stock size 265/70/R16 like the Rugged Trails I have on it now the tire is available in the lesser load range saving 8 pounds a tire.

Go up a size 265/75/16 or stay stock 265/70/16?

Will the added weight of 12 pounds per tire for a total of 48 pounds kill MPG

Anyone with experience with these tires at this size and any other advice chime in please!!!!!!

Also clocked my spedo with GPS today. I had no noticeable spedo error as some have said thoughts?

 

You're milage change will be very minor...

x2 mileage change will be minimal, but michelins are expensive as F.

 

I had the stock rugged fails, that were 265/70r16. I went to a nitto terra grappler in 265/75R16 load rang E. I lost like 1 MAYBE 2 mpg.

Also i did a GPS speed and am right on. It is not off at all. the tire calculator site told me it was off by about 2 mph but it is not.

I also found that the truck handles quite a bit better with the stiffer side walls, and heaver tires. cornering is nicer and just all around handling IMO.(some may disagree)

 

Yeah I am talking about that built in error of 3 percent on the spedo. Apparently it is said our trucks have a spedo error its like the spedo was calibrated for a 265/75 tire not 265/70. I am balls on GPS to spedo. lots I have read say they had a 3 percent error with spedo they put 3 percent larger tires on 265/75 and bam right on the spedo and 3 percent change on odometer. Mine however is spot on the spedo with 265/70's

 

This would make sense if you put the bigger tires on and now are spot on with GPS and spedo

 

This is my major concern going with BFG AT's but from what I have been told it will be minimal

Yeah me too. From what Mike from NH has told me go with load range C it should help with the MPGs. BFG AT are aggressive and heavy but look great. They are my other choice I had them on a Wrangler and they are good tires loud as hell though. And heavy check out tire rack.com for specs on all tires.

 

Ya they are around 54lbs a tire... It's either those or the new Toyo AT2

 

Yup they are heavy they killed me in the Wrangler. Would you go up a size they would look killer.

Really what came on yours stock 265/70/18?

 

I have a set of LTX AT 2, on 05 trd 4x4, have about 45k with maybe 10k left. Best tires ever for me. I got about 18mpg of showroom floor, get same thing with the tires. Not real loud but will pull through anything I have seen, snow mud, etc.
