I've seen the gas mileage threads, but
just curious if anyone get's a reliable 20 mpg or better on highway with 4.0L V6 in any trim (access, double, long,X, etc...) ... double short a plus as that's mostly what I'm targeting.

I can get 22 mpg highway at best with my '88 4x4 pickup, 4-cylinder. Not willing to give up much mileage on next vehicle (although my '88 pickup needs to go bye-bye hopefully within a year)

Also, if a tonneau has certifiably improved your gas mileage even 1 mpg, I'd like to hear about it.

    ----------
thanks for feedback anyone, as I might be able to squeak bye with a small SUV, but only due to improved gas mileage, not convenience.

Definitely, but not if you're driving much over 70. (I'm DCLB sport)

I get 18 consistently climbing hills and valleys with lots of country roads, stops signs, some highway and city streets.

I got 21mpg on a 2 hour trip one time doing 65 except for the 30 and 45 zones here n there. First time for that though! But it proved to me it could be done!

I'd probably be getting that more consistently if I didn't have so many damn hills around me.

If you get a scangauge you can always monitor real time mpg and drive accordingly.

Most of my driving is on the interstate. I can get between 19.5 to 20.5 MPG.

I actually got 20.5 on the way to work on a very slow day, like 65 tops. It is about 21 miles away so I figure a gallon each way or so.

4.0L 6 speed 4x4 access cab, only uses 93 octane. I have seen 20.5 and 20.3 a few times, on all highway trips with a tonneau cover, the secondary air filter removed, and an eco-2 VPE.

I can't say as the tonneau cover makes a difference on this truck as I put it on the day I picked up the truck, but it was good for about a mile per gallon improvement on my 04 Tacoma.

I have since added a high flow oil free air filter, and made the switch to synthetic oil, however, that was right at the switch to winter blended gas here, so I have no concrete info on those improvements, but I expect that I'll be seeing about 21.5 highway come spring and regular gas again as my mileage has not really dropped off due to the winter gas this year.

an auto will get better mileage because of it's gearing.

I got 22 mpg on a Florida trip (480 miles). I routinely get 17-19 mpg around town. Last fill up was 18.49 mpg to be exact.

Tonneau makes ZERO difference. Even the Mythbusters guys disproved that theory.

With 6spd (higher rpms in top gear than auto) depends on 'Highway'

Cruising 2 lane state/county highways 55-65 mph always over 20 mpg in summer. Get 21-22 on many summer trips, but add traffic it drops.

Interstate speeds at 70mph about 19, again, once you go over that, it drops. Auto tranny will do better mpg over 70.

In general, Knock another 1 mpg off if your gas has 10% ethanol. Winter gas, take another mpg. Cold weather, one more.

Between 18-20 spring and summer only, winter is 15-17 mpg, if fuel milage is important, go with the I-4.

I agree with concrete jedi. 18-20 in summer, 15-17 in the winter. You may occasionally get over 20 but only if you drive like grandma and keep the speed down. Your original post asked about a reliable 20+. My answer to that is NO.

thanks for all the replies so far ...

I just stopped by a house, couple blocks away, dude told be he gets up to 25, 26 mpg on his prerunner double cab, short bed with SR5 only (the 245 width tires).

I doubt this guys numbers are accurate. Maybe he works for Toyota.

^Maybe with a 4cyl but even then, that's pushing it (power vs weight ratio).

Speaking of tires, I do have the stock 245's but will be putting on 265/75/16 Firestone Destination A/T's this coming Saturday so it will be interesting to see what the difference will be.

Depending on his driving, maybe..... I've been able to hold 30mpg on a flat stretch of road for a couple miles. I'd love to see what I'd be getting if I was back in the flat lands of SC. Here in NY it doesn't matter what I do when it drops to 10mpg or less over every damn hill. :(

I'd love to see what I could do without hills for a couple hundred miles! :D

I got 21.something after 2 hours of mostly flat, with a few hills, lower speed limits, CC set to 65 when possible, and hammering it to pass several people.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've been getting anywhere from 12.9 to 14. Never more than 15. I've got the v6 access cab. I've got the volant cai and flowmaster catback exhaust. I've still got the stock tires (245 75 r16) and I don't drive very aggressivly. I'm running about 32 psi in my tires. When I first got my truck I was getting around 17-18. My friends told me that it would get worse in the winter but I didn't think it would be that bad. Any opinions???

Well, that winter gas really does have a significant impact. Once you get further into spring, see what you get but honestly the biggest thing is your right foot. I mean, I don't know what you mean by "very aggressively" but I typically got 17 mpg until the last couple of tanks. I've made a concerted effort to drive more slowly/grandpa-ish and that's why the last couple tanks have been 18.5 mpg. I still do my normal speed of no more than 9mph over the limit but it's all in how I get there.

Here's a thought: What did you get before the CAI? Maybe try taking it out and putting the OEM back in and see if that might be the culprit (don't laugh, it happens sometimes).

This guy has an 05+ Prerunner DC short auto, so he's sportin' the V6 for sure.

I think he's wishing he gets 26 mpg.
