What Oil Filter Do You Use?

    Also, take your favorite new oil filter, wrap a white paper towel around your finger and run it around on the threads in the center of the filter. On most brands you'll get a lot of gray metal powder left over from when they cut the threads and they didn't bother to clean up. The OEM filters have much less of this, in my experience. You would think that any quality brand would wash that part to remove the metal filings before assembling the filter, but it seems that many do not.

    I have never seen someone complain so much about and oil filter. A oil filter is a oil filter. Does not matter they all do the same thing and its only gonna be on for 3500 miles.

    Well if you are wasting money on oil and filters every 3500, yeah, you're right, you shouldn't give a shit, because you are throwing away oil and filters (and money) that is far from the end of its usable life.

    But it isn't about how well the filter works for one interval of 5000 miles. It is about how well they all work over the life of the engine, ideally, for at least 300,000 miles. It's called cumulative effect. And as others have pointed out, a good drainback valve is pretty important on startup when the engine is essentially oil-starved. Over 300,000 miles, that is a lot of starts.

    in regards to the post about metal shavings on the filter threads from factory, always a good idea to dip your finger in the new oil and rub some oil in the threads and on the gasket of the new filter before putting it on. it lubes up the threads and gasket and takes care of any crud that might be in there

    Well Dave - they do and they don't. All filter but some do it better, especially at startup on cold days. Do a little browsing here at TW and on the internet (lots of informal studies that have reasonable qualitative/quantitative data). The point being is that for the price difference between a cheap filter and the OEM filter, the clear winner IMHO is buying the OEM filter. And if you have money to burn, there are another 4 or so filters that are on par with the OEM filter regarding performance. Folks have their favorites, so they're posting them here.

    Just picked a OEM one up to see what all the hype is. What's with the goop lube on the filter gasket? Put it on cam tell a difference. M1 in the engine. Finally got a drain plug gasket too

    I usually use whatever I can get that is cheap. Advance Auto Parts usually has good deals on Purolators and I stock up on them. The Purolator PureOne are very nice, and have a nice textured shell which makes installation and removal nice. I've never really had a problem with Purolator, Bosch, Wix and even the cheaper STPs.

    Only filter that has given me problems or concerns has been the Fram orange filter. I installed one on my Jimmy and one on my dad's van. Both oil filters spun on from the bottom. At the following oil change the black gritty bottom, I believe it's called their 'sure grip' was soaked in oil. There were no oil leaks from either engines. After that experience I was done with Fram oil filters.

    My opinion is there are many good options that are priced the same, if not lower, why chance it?

    Toyota OEM made in Japan. It's not cheap but Supposed to be one of the best ones.

    You're supposed to lube the gasket before you tighten the filter. The OEM filters come pre-lubed.

    K&P (not K&N)Like I said,I have been using these filters on my vehicles for years.

    1)Filters 100% of the time(NO BYPASS valve to allow unfiltered oil in your engine on start up.
    2)Has a strong magnet inside to trap any metal .
    3)Lifetime Never wears out
    4)Actually see what is being filtered out
    5)Acts as a heat sink/cooler
    6)The design has less restriction & increases oil flow(less force on the pump)
    7)#6 results in increase HP
    8)Environmentally friendly(NO dumping of used filters)

    I first,put one on my Harley after talking to Dan Baisley(Famous builder & drag racer).Marve, JAGG oil coolers recommends this filter.

    I had two consecutive Frams with defective drainback valves in the early 90's. I quit using them before I knew how poorly constructed the filter section is.
