The Right Amp

Hello everyone, this will be the first mod to my 09 Tacoma DC 4x4! First off, does anyone know of a walk through for removing the stock JBL upgrade subwoofer? Secondly, can someone help me choose the right amp for the 2 10" subs I'm putting in my truck. I'm looking only to add one amp. Preferred brands would be Kicker or JBL, if you know of a better amp that is cheaper or you think is a better piece of equipment please tell be about it. Thank you everyone!

 

dont think those subs or gonna fit a double cab. they're too deep. might want to look into w3v2 if you want jl audio. for amps i know of someone selling a rockford fosgate punch 75. but in all seriousness the possibilites are endless as long as the amp will fit- your budget and your mounting space. need to know what you're willing to spend.

 

might have to rethink those subs...you don't have a lot of room to play with and depth is one of the FIRST concerns you have when chosing a sub for a Tacoma.


I've been using Hifonics amps for years (since the late 80's). They have always served me well. I'm currently running the 5-channel in my accord coupe and it's been installed for almost 5 years now. Just bought a ZXi-6610 for my Tacoma and is awaiting installation. You can get them for decent prices on the net these days as well.

 

Blue, I had my mind set on the Alpine PDX 5, but these hifinics are going for a good price. So you are pretty happy with them it sounds like. I am going to check into them a little more. I think you can get the new 5 channle for around $200 can't you?

 

Just a bit over 200 is correct. IIncludes your crossovers as well. I've been very happy with mine. But keep in mind, stereo stuff is VERY subjective. You'll get 10 different opinions on one subject from 10 different people. Also depends on your listening habits and what you expect out of your system. There is nothing wrong with the PDX series...I'm just not willing to pony up that kind of money when I can get what I need for waaaaaaaay less. I'm not much of a sheeple....I do what makes ME happy (system wise). I don't have to buy what everyone else is buying just because it's the latest, greatest thing.

I continue to buy Hifonics. There are better amps out there, but they are way more expensive. IMO, for most people, you'd never know the difference. I've said it before, the install makes more of a difference than a particular brand.

 

You make good points. It is not like I am installing a competition system. I listen to mainly classic rock and a lot of live old school rock. I need drums and a bass guitar. I am going to check them out a little more like I said. Too bad no one around here sells them. But I can red a lot and order online. Thanks for the review.

 

A solid amp is a solid amp. Unless you are going to be spending a ton of money in other area's on your system, you really won't notice any difference. Just not worth the extra money in an everyday system. You will get braggin rights with certain crowds with brand xyz, but all that matters is that you are happy with your sound.

 

Mtx are small and very underrated. They also have a intake fan cooling system to run your system 24/7. Runs cooler than most amps in 1-2hrs.

 

Yes, the W3v3 are too deep.
I would keep away from active cooling (anything with fans) due to the possible noise from the fans and the very good possibility of the fans going out. I remember this was a huge problem for Phoenix Gold when they first came out.

In the past I've enjoyed Memphis Car Audio and Soundstream, but would not limit future possibilities to those alone. I hate Rockford (I replaced it with a soundstream that was 1/2 the size, soundstream was louder, cleaner, better built) and Audiobahn... probably more but can't think of them. Mainly I hate stuff where you have to unmount the amp to make an adjustment, settings controls that are cheap, massive amounts of settings that are pointless, or fluff. I prefer a minimalist approach with reasonable control and a design that's built to withstand war
