how do traffic apps get their info ?

I have a traffic app on my iphone and here in los angeles it is spot on accurate. how do these things get their information ?

We use inductive loop and video based vehicle detection for our signals.
We're considering a pilot program with radar to extend the useful range of above-ground detection, but my boss isn't too keen on it, and it's not compatible with our current hardware.

 

I wish.

Been trying to get the boss to buy some drones for years.
