Cab Over Camper Thoughts

My buddy recently got rid of his truck and is willing to give me a VERY good deal ($200) on a used 1987 Lance Squire LS1000 7.6 Cabover camper.

It could use a good cleaning but everything is there, it's water tight, and it's in decent shape. It's got a sink, oven, stove, and fridge (currently missing). No shower or toilet.

Problem is I can't find ANY info on the camper. I think it weighs 1000-1200 lbs and was originally designed for use in the smaller pickups of the 80's.

When my buddy picked it up he drove it home on the back of a stock and abused base model 1990 toyota truck (2wd, 4cyl, 4speed), so I know my truck can "handle it".

I'll use it for weekend get-aways with the girlfriend and dogs. My buddy liked it more than pop-ups because you can get away with "urban camping".

However, some buddies and I are going to Baja in June for a week long surfing, dirt biking, and beer drinking trip. I'm thinking of bringing the new addition but it's to soon to tell.

Any input, thoughts, opinions?

 

Probably be fine with air bags, depends on the weight of the camper.For $200 try it out,if it does'nt work sell it..

That's nasty..why not just buy a travel trailer to pull? If you can't afford that why not just a tent.

 

Just by the looks of that cab over it has to be heavier than that.
Isn't there a tag on it to verify?

My thoughts exactly... For $200 I figure it's worth a shot. If I don't like it I'll probably end up making money on the thing.

I put ZERO options in on the NADA guide and it still says it's worth $400-500. Also emailed Lance to see if they have anymore info on this gem.

It's 25+ years old and needs to be cleaned up a bit, but I wouldn't call it nasty. I know it's not perfect, but it should fit my needs (urban camping, Sierras, Mexico, Baja, etc.).

I can afford a trailer but don't want one. Extra insurance, registration, storage, 55mph limitations, Parking, etc. Also, ANY type of trailer isn't very convenient where we are going. Tires shred and leaf springs snap. Dirt Roads and Beaches in Baja aren't easy on equipment.

I like the idea of being able to stash all my equipment in there and lock it up. Also I was gonna run my current shell with a hitchmount for my 2005 Yamaha WR450. Now I can just take off the bars and put it inside the trailer...

I don't think so. Probably 1200lbs max. This thing was made in 1987 for the mini trucks of the day.

Differant brand, but here is one I saw a while back. Wasnt squatting too bad at all. I say do it. Stock springs, and I didnt look for air bags. Just snapped a pic.

$200 sounds a heck of a lot better. $13k is nuts for something so small.

 

For $200 I would jump on it. Sure beats paying $200 a month on a new one.

 

I would love a FWC. But can't justify the cost. I also like the idea of being able to sleep in this anywhere without having to "pop" the top...

I'm looking at suspension ideas right now. I know that's going to be the weak link (pretty sure I have the stock non-TSB three leaf pack).

Any suspension ideas? (Timbrens, AAL, etc...)

 

Air bags is the only option uf u ever want to drive ur truck without the camper.
