Unfortunately a car company needs car-based crossover SUVs to survive. Well-financed companies like Toyota can have two models in each size segment, one for pavement pounding and one for off-road:

    Small: RAV4, FJ Cruiser
    Midsize: Highlander, 4Runner
    Large: Sequoia, Land Cruiser

One look at the sales charts and it's pretty clear the pavement pounders sell a lot more: http://pressroom.toyota.com/releases/december+2012+sales+chart.download

More cash-strapped companies can't afford the development costs, so they pick one model to develop, which usually ends up being the crossover. Nissan did this with the Pathfinder. Mitsubishi, with all its off-road racing heritage, ends up selling only this SUV:

Crossovers are fine. Ugly vehicles are not. This being stupid looking is more important than what segment its in.

I wouldn't mind the world ending in 2013 if it means Jeep won't get to make the 2014 Cherokee.

its a jeep compas concept, not a cherokee. 2014 doesnt change one bit body wise, they are tho adding a diesle engine. that i know for a fact. i used to work for chrysler. either way its hitious to say the least.

What? Jeep already confirmed this is the Liberty's replacement and that it's using the Cherokee name.
