No need for a catch can for NA engines IMO. Waste of money, not enough crankcase pressure for it to be worth it.

Exactly. They catch blowby/ oil from being recirculated into intake tract via pcv valve from high crankcase pressure. No need with an NA engine, esp a stock one.

Ah, we'll I'd seen a DIY occ someone did on here and it looked like it took care of the sludge in the oil cap. Iirc his was NA as well. I'll dig around and see if I can find the thread.

I'm by no means an expert on these things, just shooting off ideas

I was wondering if I was missing something. Sounds like I need a shorter oil filler neck or a cast filler neck so it stays warm until the engine cools.

I was going to do a catch can at some point but a home made one. Spending $100+ on those things is ridiculous... $5 in hose and $10 in PVC fittings and you can have one made in about 20 minutes.

No and the condition is very common and shouldn't effect anything. Some cars just have a better crankcase venting system but it's nothing to worry about. It's could possibly be a problem if ALL you did was short trips.
The old GM Quad 4 had a problem with that because they were in alot of Cutlas Calais and all the old ladies going to church and back were having bearing faliure from the rust inside the engine from not driving it enough to let the oil warm up.

Me either, but i know a little. They are useful on high hp sc/ turbo engines. I ran one on my track/ autocross car. NA pickups that spend 90%+ of life below 3000 rpms dont need them IMO. Not sure how a catch can would prevent sludge buildup on the oil cap, they are two completely separate things.
I ran a catch can and still got similar sludge on my track car under the oil cap. It happens in the cold, not really an issue besides it looks nasty.

Exactly, plus for one to actually function as intended it needs to be properly designed. They need to be under slight vaccum so they actually collect the oil particles, but not so much vaccum that they impede proper pcv system operation. Its a little more complex than throwing a can/filter onto the engine with some clamps and tubing.

There's a write I found, I can't remember if it was here or XR Underground, that showed how to make your own catch can using PVC. It seemed to work really well, it was made by one of those guys who had a high dollar one but wanted to customize. It seemed to catch just as much as his expensive can also. I'm at 80k miles on the truck now and I've never had one so I'm in no hurry to add one in. If Toyota intended for the truck to need one, they would have put one in there.

Some good info about catch cans here:

    http://www.gmsportcompact.net/forum...shop-the-next-mod.Advanced-PCV-control./page3

And the OP, qwikredline is no Joe schmoe. Very knowledgeable racecar builder, driver. Helped GM prototype vettes, developed the CTS-V and their alms cars, the cobalt ss koni challenge/ time attack/ grand am cup cars. His dad also taught the gm factory vette alms drivers how to use ABS when it was first introduced into the vettes.

Yes, I'm a nutswinger of his...

Well did you guys see what I posted Friday night. I got 8.9 MPG while towing the snowmobiles and that was all highway. I got 11.3 while towing 1 1/2 hrs backroads off the highway each way. Not sure about last tank as I haven't refilled yet. Drove real slow through the snow the whole way. Took 6.5hrs to get home last night.
